In my previous church, I was a backup singer in the worship band. That is, until one Sunday when I walked in, expecting to sing, waited for the band for 45 minutes and then learned they switched to CD worship. After weeks of struggling with a bad attitude about it, I left.

My new church is much, much smaller and consists mostly of former members of my previous congregation. The worship team is small too and consists of a leader/accoustic guitar player, a singer/bass guitarist and a singer/percussionist. I heard we have a keyboard player coming but I have yet to see it.

I do not have a talent for a musical instrument. However, I am a singer and am accomplished at harmonizing, something that is lacking.

So what's the problem?

First of all .. . the congregation is small, and I fear that if the team were to grow much larger, we'd be out of balance with the congregation. (In addition, I have a voice that projects, and to me, it's almost irrelevant to join the band when I blend so well from 5 to 10 feet away.)

Second, and more importantly, I have a very hard time harmonizing with the pastor's wife/worship leader. She is an alto and it's impossible for me to sing an octave above her. I usually harmonize in the lower part of my register and have a hard time finding my way.

In addition, there are two women in the congregation that sing very loudly in the higher notes, and it grates on my nerves. Like me, they require no microphone.

I feel called to support this church in other ways, but left my previous congregaton because my gifts and talents were not being used. I would hate for this to happen here ....

What about putting together an ensemble that would do "special music" in the service at various times throughout the year?

Or an ensemble that would do music ministry out in the community?

Hmm... do you sing an octave above the other women, whenever you harmonize? Or did you mean that you usually harmonize with the guy singers by singing an octave above them?
I was wondering if you could just sing a third above the other woman in the team...

Do you do solos? Could you offer to do a solo as "special music" during worship?

If the worship team is open to it, could you sing with them on a trial basis and see how it works out?

Our congregation is tiny (about 20 people on a good day) but growing.

Generally, when I used to harmonize on the worship team, I tried to sing a different harmony than the other women. But mostly, I based my harmonies on the worship leader, who was almost always male.

I'm really not sure where I want to go at this point.

How about Just be a part of the congregation and worship God. You state that you have a voice that projects; so project from the congregation.

I certainly do not see the importance of being "On the Worship Team", just worship God in Spirit and in Truth, and see where things may go in the future.

Thanks

As a battle scarred veteran of 'worship' teams, might I suggest the same as RC?

In my experience, everyone wants to be or thinks they should be on the worship team. It is a very big responsibility and to be taken as seriously as the Pastor's role.

IMO, alot of churches would do well to either cut their teams in half or do away altogether and just have one person or perhaps rotate. Especially with such a small congreagation...do they really need another leader?

I find that a worship team who can carry everything often results in a congregation that sings-along without gusto -- when they sort of can't hear themselves anyways and don't really feel that blendy feeling that one gets as part of a choir or team, you know... so they sing with half a heart.

If you consider that the whole congregation is a choir for God, then there's no need to have every part and harmony represented up front -- only enough to inspire and encourage all the people to participate. In this situation, the congregation is the best place for the kind of well-voiced excellent harmonizer. There's no better way to encourage your neighbours to lift their voices as well.

That's kind of what I'm doing now, while I wait for God to speak.

I have no aspirations to be a leader.

But yes, they do need another leader, becuase the current one can't do it all.

Yeah, you are right. I have never really understood the concept of the "worship team." And I have noticed that the "worship team" tends to get elevated above rest of the congregation for some reason.

I will agree with what RC said. I use to be on a Worship Team myself and from being battle scarred myself, we outsing the congregation and cannot hear them sing. You are part of the "Heavenly Choir." Use your talent to go to nursing homes or homeless shelters. You would be surprised how blessed these people would be. They may in turn wind up blessing you.

Hmmm ... that is an interesting thought. Maybe I could partner with somebody from another church for this? I can't see doing it by myself especially since it would be a capella. I used to sing in an a capella choir but the other voices sang other parts so it was like having a background.

I wouldn't even mind worshipping on the streets! I've had a vision of doing "God songs" out there for a long time.

I guess I feel bad for saying that I harmonize better with men ... all of my harmonizing skills are self-taught while listening to music. So most of the harmonies I've learned come from listening to worship music led by men and listening for the female voice. When I listen to women, it's harder to pick out the harmony.

Um, no, I just don't feel called to do it by myself!

That's exactly what I was suggesting upthread when I said this:

What about putting together an ensemble that would do ... music ministry out in the community?

And... do you read music?
If not, what about challenging yourself to learn to read music so that you can expand your abilities to do harmony? That would open up so many different arrangements of music (SATB, SSAATTBB, SSATB, SSA, SSAA, etc.)... and give you the ability to harmonize with whatever combination of voice parts your ensemble ends up being.

I "sight read." That means I can tell a quarter note from a half note, and can tell an a from a c or a g ... but I can't tell you to save my life what an A or a G or a C sounds like.

I also have found that by and large, most worship teams/musical groups do not use scripted harmonies and use chords in lieu of sheet music.

When you sing from within the congregation, do you harmonize then?

Can you read music? Give thought to the "Sacred Harp" genre of traditional American folk hymns -- four parts, melody often in the tenor -- the four voices sit in a square facing each other.
