(first of all, i know its not the inspired words of god, but its fun to read more about him from books that, uh, 'didn't make the cut'. i know some protestant purists who would deem it borderline blaspheme to consider reading anything that is not apart of the protestant bible, but when i get a DVD, i like to watch the commentary, and the behind the scenes, and everything. so with the bible, its interesting to have these supposed books to describe some behind the scenes what not that went on.)

so after some answers i received on the catholic bible, i went home yesterday morning and did some searching on the books and found this concept of the Gnostic gospels... as well as other books that didn't make it. that are not part of the RCB as well, and some of them peaked my interest. i went to the library and checked out a few. i was going to check out a RCB, but they were already all checked out. anyway, i checked out the Gospel of Judas, The Gospel of Mary, and The Gospel of Thomas. after just reading all 3, i have a a question or comment or 2....

for starters, i can see why these did not make it to the bible... especially the gospel of Judas... it's so incomplete, its almost impossible to read. every otter word is missing with the translators belief of what should belong. so it was rather confusing. i really did not get much out of it, except Jesus said that evidently there were 4 angels in addition to himself that made Adam and eve. (Judas 13:1-7) which is a different idea. and in this particular book, Jesus laughs at the disciples expense alot it seems

i was hoping more from Mary, because my wife has always said "if women had written the bible... there would be so many More details and stories" but apparently, Mary did not hold to to this theory. bummer.

Thomas was nothing more than just sayings and what-not by Jesus... which is weird. because i read at a website that some consider the Gospel of Thomas heretical??? i thought Judas was more heretical than Thomas. i really didn't even see anything wrong with what Thomas wrote.

i also read online the Infant Gospel of Thomas... and that was interesting.

the thing that strikes me as odd... these books are not in the bible... so you really have to be careful of what you read an how you take it, but are these 'gospels' really the truth according to how the writers felt? or just some papers found in a cave written by some farmer who claimed on paper to be part of the Holy Posse??? it begs to wonder...

i also checked out Tobit... for the sake of reading at-least a book of the RCB, but have not gotten to it yet. am curious of what all treasures i find. though...

any comments from anyone else about gnostic gospels and what you think or have read?

I have looked thru some of them, Gospel of Thomas included. For the most part they are what is known as "Pseudopigrapha," meaning false writing. IOW, they claim to be written by someone but are from a much later period and could not possibly be by that person. So they lie even about their own authorship. This was common in the gnostic writings. It was done to add authority to their own skewed viewpoints.

so IOW, i should pretty much just take these as "good fiction" at best... interesting. not to base my life on, but just to get a better grasp on people's characters and stuff it woulda been cool if there was one book in the bible that summed up home life for Jesus. how mary and joseph treated each other, how they raised him, and so on. i just think it would be interesting to read facts about that, not someones skewed oppinions on how they think it was. ah well.

"Good fiction at best" is perhaps being too generous. These texts have an agenda - that being to promote an historic heresy.

If you want to get a handle on the beliefs and perspectives of the Gnostics, then these texts can certainly help. Otherwise, I would suggest leaving them alone.

I believe that the only extra-biblical book that has any credibility is The Book of Enoch and that only because it is quoted from a few times in the bible.

The above posters are right, the gnostic books do nothing but try to distort Gods word and really promise hidden knowledge for transcendence or something like that.
