Childhood Officially Left Behind in "Half-Blood Prince"
Christa Banister

Forgoing the usual light comedic exchange between Harry Potter and his Muggle family in the opening sequence of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, it’s immediately apparent that the next two and a half hours won’t simply be Hogwarts as usual.

Instead, it’s much better.

Juxtaposing a far more ominous tone with the clumsy romantic entanglements of its teenage protagonists, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is easily the funniest, darkest and most ambitious film of the series...

Although a few plot points were inevitably tweaked for the big screen, a move that’s been widely debated among the blogosphere’s fanboy contingency, the flick’s strict adherence to the spirit of the book should still delight longtime fans. And for those who haven’t already boarded the Hogswarts Express in the past, well, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince probably isn’t the place to start because there’s not much that’s going to make all that much sense without the proper backstory.

In fact, context is really everything for the forthcoming festivities as the story begins without anything resembling a preamble...

I just finished the the half blood prince and the final book in the series this week. So yes I am excited to see the movie.

rottentomatoes.com has a score of 94% which is very high for that many critics.

I plan to see it after the initial furor dies down, but I don't have high hopes for it. None of the movies live up to the books and I don't expect this one to. I just feel at this point that I need to see it through.

The writing got boring after book 3, and I only sat through half of the 1st movie on DVD (not because I didn't like it, just because I didn't have time to finish it when we had it). Still, the story had potential and I am wondering if it is worth catching up on the Harry Potter movies and seeing the new one... I am, after all, a dedicated fantasy fan. Even if Gandalf's farts after a night of drinking at the Prancing Pony are more powerful than Harry on his best day.

My husband and I saw it at midnight. We enjoyed it...I think this one stuck the most closely to the story of any of the recent movies, yet it held together well on its own. There are a few things they changed, and a few things they were forced to change because of plot changes in previous movies.

I've never read any of the HP books, but have always enjoyed the movies.

Like stellaluna, I learned a long time ago not to expect a movie to match the book.

I look forward to the movie...probably after all the hub-bub, we'll see it.

I was going to see it today but decided to wait a few days. It has been awhile since I read the book so I probably wouldn't remember if something was changed or not. Maybe I should get out my Harry dvds and watch them so I can remember where we have left off.

We went to see it today and I thought it was good. A lady next to me was sobbing during a particular scene in the movie. I don't want to spoil it for anyone who have not seen the movie or read the book...but it's when one character did not make it. My son and I were like trying to hold our laughter because she was just in tears and sniffling.

I am a hardcore HP fan, and it is killing me that I didn't go to the midnight showing last night. It is also killing me that I have to wait until Monday to see it. Arrrrrrrgh. Still, I have high hopes. While none fo the movies top the books (for obvious reasons), by and large I have found them to be fun visual companions. Oh well, I just bought a HP6 t-shirt on ebay... maybe it'll have speedyswift shipping and arrive in time for the showing??

Kewl! I get to be the first HP hater in the thread!

I find it curious that the series glorifies Harry and his group as the "good" side of the witch/warlock world when, in reality, the entire lot of them are all evil. Anyone have any insight into the occult mindset? Do the "white" witches really think of themselves as "good" or maybe just "different" or what? I know HP is just a story and all that...blah, blah, blah. But there's no denying that the series has definitely raised interest in the occult...and, I daresay, membership.

Well, I would have never become a witch if it wasn't for Harry, so I owe Him my life.

The least faithful Potter movie when compared to the book. My wife took this afternoon off from work so we could watch the matinee and we're disapointed.

Well I saw it this afternoon. I liked the movie but again I just can't remember much of the book so I guess I can't compare it to the book. I think maybe I will go back and re-read the series. Maybe I will have it finished by the time the last movie comes out lol.

Same here. It FELT to me like it stuck pretty closely to the book, at least for the major plotlines. As usual, there were things that got cut or shortened.

Woo-hoo! It looks like dh and I are going to be able to see it this weekend. I have been motivated to get our newborn to take a bottle for just this reason. Is that sad or what? Either way, I am excited.

TheTheory, I am so happy you found you place in life.

Seriously, has anyone that trots out the occult stuff actually met a pagan, let alone a wiccan? Well I do, and it only reinforces the fact that HP is a work of fiction. Or maybe the local pagan convention really does need to get that special permit so they can fly their brooms in a friendly game of Quidditch. I will make sure to ask next time I see one of them.

I hope this thread will not turn out to be if Christians should watch HP --- too many of that in the past already.

Can you provide some evidence for this claim? I'm not aware of any credible survey that shows that occult membership has increased in recent years as a result of the Harry Potter books or movies.

Saw it yesterday afternoon.
As an adaptation of the book it was dissapointing. But as it has been pointed out before, several times, adaptations of a book to movie leaves a lot behind in the translation. I don't mind having to change events because of time constraints, it's when they change characters personalities or omit what I think are important details that drive me nuts!

The obsession Harry had with what Malfoy was up to did not translate to the screen. However, I did like the fact Tom Felton received more screen time.

Loved all the scenes with Ron & the love potion. Also liked seeing quiddich return.

The scene of Dumbledoor's fnal moments lacked the tension I felt while reading the book. Then again, I've been unhappy with Gambon's portrayal of Dumbledoor ever since he took over the role after Richard Harris's death.

The humor was good.
