I was just reading my electric bill. Something I have not really done in years. I always look at usage and total. I was shocked to find out how it broke down. 70$ for usage and 90$ for delivery?!? Anyone know a way around this? I am with National Grid. I can find cheaper suppliers, but the delivery fee seems out of line.

Ever since the choice program came into play, utility companies have been breaking down their bills. The delivery charges are loosely based on the usage. Usage goes down, so does delivery. The delivery is how much the company that bills you charges. My electric bill more than DOUBLED this month for no good reason. Partially because rates went up, partially because they got rid of "special rates" like load management (the lady actually said, "You can run all your appliances at once now if you want to") and partially because they under-estimated the month before.

One thing that might help for cutting down on the bill is to switch to the CFL bulbs- the little twisty fluorescent bulbs. I switched every bulb in my apartment to those, and while the bulbs are more expensive at first, they last a lot longer than traditional bulbs and are much cheaper to run. My electricity bills are usually around $40 a month.

The problem currently is that my "Delivery charge" is actually more than my "Supply charge". It costs me more to get the energy than it costs for the energy I use. I really can not complain because this new house is much more efficient than the old, but it just seems way out of wack. I have a bunch of compact fluorescent bulbs. I learned to buy the higher spectrum ones to avoid that yellow tint to the light. Also, the 3-way and dimmable CF bulbs seem to break easily.
