Hey hey. Question for the Hebraic students in the house:

I've been going through Ezekiel in a linear fashion. One of the most amazing things I noticed was the role of the prince in the re-established Temple-House. During the description of his duties, however, I noticed a (narrow) discrepancy in the Hebrew for one of the duties. I would normally have busted out my Hebrew Lexicon, but alas I have one not and my own Hebrew is too rusty to know this phrase for sure, or understand its acceptable variants.

The phrase is: "as much as he is able to give". The NET says "as much as he wishes," but then says the literal wording is "“a gift of his hand”. My NKJV says the literal is "as much as his hand can reach," while the NASB gives an alternate translation and not a more literal hint, making me think "as much as he wishes" is literal.

So, a little clarification on the acceptable variants of the "literal Hebrew" would be appreciated. :)

Thanks!

I have a feeling God thinks it rather cute that we all think we understand him completely.

micharmony, Shalom, and Welcome to the Forum.

I pulled this off my e-sword, so take your pick of the right meaning. I looked at about fifteen Bibles, and there is quite a diversity of ways to say that verse.

(HOT) ומנחה איפה לאיל ולכבשׂים מנחה מתת ידו ושׁמן הין לאיפה׃

H4991
מתּת
mattâth
mat-tawth'
Feminine of H4976 abbreviated; a present: - gift, reward.

H3027
יד
yâd
yawd
A primitive word; a hand (the open one (indicating power, means, direction, etc.), in distinction from H3709, the closed one); used (as noun, adverb, etc.) in a great variety of applications, both literally and figuratively, both proximate and remote: - (+ be) able, X about, + armholes, at, axletree, because of, beside, border, X bounty, + broad, [broken-] handed, X by, charge, coast, + consecrate, + creditor, custody, debt, dominion, X enough, + fellowship, force, X from, hand [-staves, -y work], X he, himself, X in, labour, + large, ledge, [left-] handed, means, X mine, ministry, near, X of, X order, ordinance, X our, parts, pain, power, X presumptuously, service, side, sore, state, stay, draw with strength, stroke, + swear, terror, X thee, X by them, X them-selves, X thine own, X thou, through, X throwing, + thumb, times, X to, X under, X us, X wait on, [way-] side, where, + wide, X with (him, me, you), work, + yield, X your-selves.

Interesting...the only reference I could find on 46:5 was the following from Drake study notes:

Notes For Verse 4
a [six lambs without blemish, and a ram without blemish] The estimated cost of the 6 lambs and the ram for each sabbath day would be $605, to which should be added the cost of flour, oil, and wine as used with each sacrifice (Ezek. 46:4-5). The same would be the cost for the sacrifices in the day of the new moon, with the additional cost of a bullock ($800), and the flour, oil, and wine thereof (Ezek. 46:6-7). The estimated cost of the lambs and rams for the 52 regular sabbaths of a year would be $31,460.

Sounds to me like what the Prince would be able to give would be what he could afford.

Bob, Shalom.

Did you forget to add the 'New Moon' offerings? That would be plus another twelve, or thirteen. Expensive, huh?
