First, keep it light-hearted, people. This is not meant to be an overly serious discussion. Since watching Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince a few days ago, I've wondered how Harry and Jenny wound up together (spoiler for the last book, sorry if you're not familiar with what happens). If anything, the movie seems to put more stress on the friendship between Harry and Hermione--the stairwell scene, and at the party. For most of the earlier movies, Jenny was at best a kind of peripheral character--his saving her at the end of the Chamber of Secrets doesn't necessarily add up to anything special between them, as he would likely have done the same for any of the other students. And H and H do work so well together. His instincts are balanced very well by her more methodical methods. It's a rather "Mulder and Scully" kind of thing, and I could well imagine him telling her, like in the first X-Files movie, "You've kept me honest". But in thinking about it, I do recall that the book did seem to do a better job of making Jenny a good match for Harry. I'm not sure how (it's been a while since I've read the book), but it worked in the book. (I also sometimes think about Harry and Lula, but can't get far before hilarity ensues) So, what do ya'll think?

I think this probably goes in the book thread, since some people who haven't read the books and have only seen the movies might not know who Harry ends up with.

That could be, but it does deal with both movie and book. I can understand if it is moved.

ORIGINAL: Tinkerbell_ It's just the way things were. Ginny is just like Harry's mother not only in looks but character. That thought occurred to me after watching movie #6. quote:
And if you had paid attention in movie 5, you would have seen the groundwork being laid for Ginny and Harry to be together...especially from Ginny's point of view. Actually, you probably would have seen it from Chamber of Secrets. Yep. I was kinda disappointed at first when I realized where the love stories were going (after having read the books), but then I adjusted. I guess I'm having more of a hard time figuring out what Hermione sees in Ron.

I definitely see why things turned out the way they did, but in the movies at least there is not any good romantic chemistry between Ron and Hermoine. Harry and Hermoine have much better chemistry(maybe it's just the actors); R and H just feels ... wrong. I can't explain it. quote:
I guess I'm having more of a hard time figuring out what Hermione sees in Ron. Yeah, that might be it. I was a bookworm in school, and I'd be happy to have Ron as a friend, but Harry would be more my type. Marrying Ginny is completes Harry's entrance into the Weasley family, as does Hermoine marrying Ron. If Hermoine and Harry married, that would sort of leave Ron out of things wouldn't it? But I like Hermoine and Harry as a pairing better, so much better, even if it really wouldn't work from the storytelling point of view.

For the books (and somewhat for the movies) I really tend to identify with the character of Harry. As such, when *I* find a female personality appealing I tend to want Harry to find her appealing, too. Thus I've been an advocate of Harry/Hermione. I have loved the character of Hermione from book one... of course, the writing was on the wall by book/movie 4 that it wouldn't come to be. So for me, both for the movies and books, I was rooting for Hermione until book four. Then for the books my focus shifted to Ginny through the end.For the movies the focus shifted to Luna Lovegood. Who is absolutely incredible in the movies. Whoever plays that role brings so much to the character. Anyway, I do wish that JK Rowling would suggest/OK a romantic shift for the last two movies because I really hate the character Ginny became in the 6th movie. She was fine prior to movie 6. But, ugh.

In the books, I got the impression of Ginny as being sort of a strong, silent partner to Harry. Harry's sort of the big man in charge and he needs a mate who can hold her own, but also doesn't worry or boss him around too much. Hermoine is a good friend, but being as dominant a personality as she is, she's better suited for Ron, who tends to shrink back. But no, there isn't any on-screen chemistry between R&H. I love Luna; the actress who portrays her is fantastic. I'm so glad her delivery is mild but confident and almost deadpan, rather than goofy and silly. Her and Dobby are my favorite characters. -Dan.

To be honest, when I first figured it (Harry/Ginny and Hermoine/Ron) out in the books I was disappointed. But I got over it. If this series had predominantly been a romance, I would have felt differently. There are certain genre conventions that are not usually ignored. That was how I knew Bella really was going to end up with Edward in Twilight, even when I questioned that for a while in book 3,...if a book is primarily a romance, then that amount of time isn't usually invested in the characters and their relationship - except in the rare cases where the supposed hero either dies or is found out to be evil. So, epic fantasies that are not heavy into romance often mean that "main characters" don't end up together, while fantasies where there is a strong romance element, then you usually have a development of the relationship and foreshadowing that the two characters will end up together. IRL, a man like Ron would be horribly overshadowed by a Hermoine. Plus...to be blunt, Emma Watson is really the only member of the HP cast (the kids, that is) with acting career "beauty". She's quite pretty, and all the other kids look more like "normal" (iff eccentric) HS and college kids.

He looks awful with facial hair, but he does have does have some good points.

Ginny understands Harry better than Harry understands himself. Hermione on the other hand can't control Harry as much as she'd like to. She reminds me of that bossy older sister that annoys everyone. Remember how awful she was when Harry did better in potions? Ugh...I just wanted to slap her. And funnily enough, I picture Ginny as being much prettier in the books then in the movies. quote:

She was definitely the plain Jane Hermione in the first couple of movies. After Prisoner of Azkaban she grew incredibly beautiful.

Glad I'm not the only one who has noticed these things! You are spot on, Dan!! Yeah... the Ginny–Harry pairing grew on me. The Ron–Hermione thing seemed a bit lopsided. I guess it's Ron's dogged loyalty -- despite his lapses -- that endears him to Hermione. In the movies, though, it seems that she's attracted to him b/c he likes her... not so much for his inherent qualities. That's the fault of the screenwriting, direction, and editing.
