I am looking for 1 or 2 books of the horror genre... something fit for Christians(I don't mind a little language but no sex please) something that could cause one to have nightmares(ya know, scares you so much you look into every dark corner and swear something's there) I just need a good scare.

Read Robert Liparaulo's "Germ". If that doesn't scare the snot out of you I don't know what will. You're also gonna get a zillion recommendations for Ted Dekker and Frank Peretti. Read Peretti's "The Oath", read Dekkers "Circle Trilogy" and "Showdown". The scariest books I've ever read were Clive Barker's Books of Blood short story collections. He'll have you looking into brightly lit corners, that's how scary he is.

ORIGINAL: Samurai_of_God777 I just need a good scare. What kind of scare are you looking for? The Bell Witch of Tennessee scared the mess out of me. So did Carrie (Stephen King). Uncharted, by Angela Hunt... is a book about castaways on an island... That book got under my skin. But it's not a "horror" book really.

The only book that's ever managed to scare me is King's The Shining, though part of that could be because I read it in a creepy attic. I don't remember a whole lot of sex in that one, so you could possibly give it a try.

I haven't read anything by him in years. But I watch Hellraiser every chance I get. He wrote the screenplay for the first and third Hellraiser movies if I remember right.

Hangman's Curse and Nightmare Academy were kids books. But I'd recommend Nightmare Academy to anybody. It wasn't "Boo!" kind of scary, but you could cut the tension with a knife.

Just read Dean Koontz's The Bad Place for the first time. It's one of his older novels (1990), but I genuinely haven't felt that ... unsettled ... while reading a novel in years (the only thing that comes close is some of H.P. Lovecraft's stuff). It really is a terrific book, part SF, part horror, part mystery.

Just thinking about it still gives me the heebie jeebies.

ORIGINAL: SuspenseWriter No, it's about a guy who keeps involuntarily teleporting, and each time he comes back, he doesn't know where he went. He also keeps coming back with parts of his body slighty interchanged, and it's getting worse...gaaakk! Oh yes! Same story...he has twin sisters with cats and they can do the same thing. Totally creepy book. *shudders*

The only writer in this genre I'm familiar with is F. Paul Wilson, who began with science fiction. His Repairman Jack novels imagine a universe WITH supernatural powers at work, but WITHOUT the God of the Bible -- a horrific "bad place," indeed! The protagonist, however, is definitely an intriguing character who will have you turning pages way past your bedtime! In the days of looming Obamacare, read this short story (Lipidleggin'), published in 1978, for a taste of his vigorous prose style.

At the Mountain of Madness by HP Lovecraft While not a leap-out-of-your-seat scary book (or really more of a novella), it does a fantastic job of creating the genuine sense of horror... the dread, the fear of something yet unknown. It is a classic and quite recommended.

darkness books are not horror. Lovecraft is evil. necronomicon is not for faint of heart and recommend only if you have a strong spiritual walk. that is how frightening it is. i have heard of accounts *could be false* of people becoming possessed after reading it. That is quite possibly the most evil book available for purchase

I enjoy most of Michael Crichton's books. I also enjoyed Dekker's Circle Trilogy books, though I wouldn't call them horror. Most of his other books though, meh. Sherry

The Necronomicon mentioned in Lovecraft's fiction is a book he invented for the stories. It does not exist, is has never existed. Some disturbed people wrote a book and used the same name to cash in on Lovecraft's popularity. Personally, I haven't read Lovecraft in years, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't if my taste in fiction ran in that direction.

I apologize. I did not mean he wrote the book. I do know he wrote a poem I believe was just making one paragraph. I read part of it as a teen and is the only book to give me chills.

I am a very difficult person to shake, and a lot of books that people tell me freak them out don't do really more than entertain me. But there are a few that have stood out and impressed me with their intenstiy. I have read a lot of Dean Koontz, and among those I would recommend "Servants of Twilight". It can be a little simple and straightforward at times, but IMO that only adds to the creepiness. There is no beating around the bush. And by the end you are wondering whose side you should be on. Another Koontz book would be "Intensity". If you really wanted to look inside the mind of a psychopath, look no further. If this one doesn't creep you out, you may be a psychopath as well... And now for the coup de grace. I do not recommend this book for everyone. In fact, I have only ever recommended it to one other person (that I can recall). Don't worry about sex, as there is none. The use of language may be disconcerting at times, but it is not prevelant throughout the book (it depends on which character, one in particular). I cannot guarantee that it will give you nightmares, but I assure you that it will haunt you as long as you are consciously awake. The title of the book is "Infection" and it is written by e-novelist Scott Sigler. Have you ever heard of Rob Zombie and what he has done for heavy metal and horror movies? That is kind of analogous to what Mr. Scott Sigler has brought to the horror/suspense genre of fiction books. Yikes, but that guy is a genius. Be forwarned, this book will make you flinch and cringe as you read it...
