If I am still experiencing severe headaches in twelve days, I will be getting a CAT scan. I am not sure what this is and what to expect. Hope it is not like a mri. Had one of them and literally had a panic attack. did not know til then I was claustrophobic. Can anyone shed light as to what a CATscan is, please. Thanking you in advance, melissa

I've had a couple. They just put your head in a machine and take some pictures. It's no big deal.

I had one a few years ago. I got sick from the dye.

Not everyone has that reaction though and they may have changed the formula since then.

other than it isn't a big deal, the machine is a lot bigger than an MRI but tell them if you are claustrophobic.

my youngest dd had one when she was 5.5 years old. She did just fine. She is now 8.5 and all she remembers is that it was loud.

Blessings,

Garsy

When you have a CAT scan you are not enclosed like you are for an MRI. I've had several.

You lie on a narrow bed. The scanner looks like a giant doughnut. The bed is slowly moved into "hole" of the doughnut. You just have to lie still.

Sometimes they use dye, but not always. The CT scans I had on my ears and then on my head did not use dies. The one of my chest did. They told me the dye would make me feel like I wet my pants, but I really didn't have that sensation.

I think you should be okay. I don't think you will have the feeling of being too enclosed or trapped.

Have them explain EXACTLY how the test is done. If you are still concerned that you might have a panic attack, TELL THEM!!! They might be able to give you medication.

I've had a bunch of tests run over the years--CT scan, several MRI's--and they are always very good about preparing me for what to expect.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I think I am more at ease about it knowing that the poster's child went through it at 5.5years old with no lasting effects.
I do intend to tell my dr. my concerns and would problem welcome a nerve pill or shot or something to keep me calm .

I've had several due to colon cancer dx and YES, it is like a giant donut and not scary at all. I didn't even think it was that noisy. I had with and without dye. The dye was administered by the computer through my IV. The tech explained everything and I just closed my eyes and spent the time praising Jesus for healing me.

I must admit, as much as I knock at doctors, this hi-tech equipment like a CAT scan is a good thing (I guess because I like technology and am in that field). With this equipment, they are good at diagnosing something, although the treatment may be more in question. One can go with traditional medical treatment, or maybe alternative (like I would probably do if I had something serious). Either way, I must honestly give a thumbs up for the hi-tech equipment. That's one feather in their caps with me.

Now, here's a picture of a cat scan. It's truly nothing to be afraid of.

Looks like your questions are pretty well answered by everyone here, but since I've done diagnostic imaging (nuclear medicine) for 11 years, I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents......

CT scans are in fact not nearly as noisey as an MRI. The image in CAT scan is taken using x-rays as opposed to the MRI which uses magnets to take the image. Some people have reactions to the CT dye cause it is iodine based, so if you are allergic to Iodine, you MUST tell the tech. doing the scan. The thing about CTs that's better than MRIs is that the hole you go into is a larger diameter, and it is not as long as the MRI. The MRI is more of a tube, where CT is not. Most likely if you went in the day before and asked to see the scanner, they would let you, then you'd get an idea and maybe know if you needed a pretreatment medication for your anxiety.

Just some thoughts. Hope all goes well.

Hi everyone, I wanted to say thanks to all who responded to my concerns about a catscan. Reading everything here was a huge help. I had the catscan done earlier today. Of course, I feel plum silly now because I was so unsure of what to expect. It was nothing like a mri. It was a piece of cake compared to the mri! Thanks again.

My dd was the one that thought it was noisy. Of course I should take into consideration that she thinks EVERYTHING is noisy and she had a pretty doozy of a headache so everything was just grating on her nerves.

Blessings,

Garsy

Don't feel silly! You didn't know, so you asked. Nothing silly about that.
