I'm a very new Christian and not well-versed in "Christian" fiction books (when you're an atheist, Christian fiction provokes a lot of eye-rolling, as you can imagine, so I wasn't that interested until now, heh.) I am already planning to read the Narnia books sometime, and am currently reading "Out of the Silent Planet" by C.S. Lewis, so you don't have to say those :) Thanks for any suggestions! :D

I recommend the classics This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness by Frank Peretti. In fact, I recommend anything by him.

When you come back, would you please give us a little more information? What kind of fiction do you like? Thanks in advance, and here are a few authors that get read a lot: Ted Dekker, Frank Peretti - Christian horror for lack of a better term Judith Pella, Lori Wick, Frances Rivers - Historical romance Wanda Brumstetter, Beverly Lewis - Amish settings Teri Blackstock, Dee Henderson, Karen Kingsbury - Contemporary suspense/romance Some of my favorites: Stephen Lawhead - Celtic action. He has taken both King Arthur and Robin Hood out of the English countryside and moved them to ancient Wales. Davis Bunn (aka TD Bunn, T Davis Bunn) - Contemporary suspense/thrillers. Athol Dickson - Hard to classify, but he's a great storyteller and his characters are unique and intriguing John L Robinson - Mystery author extraordinaire. His 3 Joe Boxer novels are great reading. He also posts here as suspensewriter (I think). Ruth Gutteridge - She writes comedies. Try her "Boo" series, it's hysterical Karen Hancock - Fantasy allegory Kathy Tyers - really good science fiction Well, that should give you some food for thought. Head for your local Christian book store and spend spend spend!

It depends on what you like. I'm just starting to get into Jeanette Oak. She writes mainly old-west style romances. Karen Kingsbury - family dramas. Wanda E. Brunstetter - Amish Beverly Lewis - Amish

Plenty of choices suggested here. I like Adrian Plass. Or if you're really really desperate, and can't possibly find anything else to read, try my book.

Thanks for all your suggestions, guys :) To give more info on what I like to read: I like books about vampires, especially where the vampires are developed characters and at least partially sympathetic, though I doubt that has much penetration into the Christian genre :) I've always liked Stephen King and Neil Gaiman, and I also really like Terry Pratchett. I like Japanese graphic novels (manga), both in "Gothic" themes (like the series Godchild) and in lighter adventure/romance themes, like Love Hina, Ranma 1/2, Chobits, etc. I have also enjoyed historical fiction, especially about the Middle Ages, and the standard "fantasy" setting with swords and magic, etc. :)

Thanks for the plug, Unk! By the bye, the good folks at the Authors Guild rebuilt my website, and now anyone who would like to can read the first chapters of my novels for free (under "works").

Without a doubt the most powerful and impacting Christian novel I've ever read is... Wisdom Hunter By: Randall Arthur ...don't pick it up unless you are prepared for your walk with the Lord to be rocked! Also, don't start it at night, as you won't sleep until you finish it. I do hope you give it a read...I know it'll be an amzing journey for you. ~RGLT

I have also enjoyed historical fiction, especially about the Middle Ages, and the standard "fantasy" setting with swords and magic, etc. :) Stephen Lawhead's novel Byzantium is historical fiction in the best kind of way. The writer plays meticulous attention to detail, and the characters seem to speak and think like 11th century people. Francine Rivers is ok for chick lit light -- but her characters think and talk like 20th century Baptists! The great Russian novelists wrestled with Christian themes in the context of a crumbling world. Fydor Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment is must-reading. The prostitute who knows she is sinning against social order is more righteous than the young idealist who intends to reshape social order. In this century, Aleksandr Soltsenitsn is a giant. His novels are world-class, but Gulag Archipelago is even more riveting. When this work found its way back to Russia, the nomenclatura suddenly realized, to their chagrin, that they were mistaken about the color of their hats. They were the villains, guilty of inexcusable crimes against humanity, not the heroes of history. It's hard to maintain a regime you can no longer believe in. Stretch your brain! When you re-read classical children's literature to your kids, you'll be amazed at how much piety is in them. I enjoy science fiction, and warmly recommend Gene Wolfe and Michael Flynn, a couple of Catholic writers. O. S. Card is a Mormon, so his novels have the occasional weird, poisoned, barb, as well as a taste for the scatological. Not recommended for new believers.

rjr_fan, thanks for the suggestion of Stephen Lawhead :) I read Crime and Punishment when I was in the 8th grade. (Yeah, I was a little smartypants :P) I didn't think of that angle on it at the time, but I see what you mean. That was one of the first books I remember where I was aware that the author didn't necessarily want me to take the main character's side on everything :)

The "Tahn"series by L.A. Kelly would be perfect. I just finished the second book in the triology and it was really good. It'd been a while since I read the first. There's romance and sword fights and well won't give a way too much. It is middle ages. Also... there's "Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R Tolkien - Classic. Not really any manga sadly... there is a "manga" bible of sorts as well as one series I can think of. Though its not exactly manga since its supposed to be a fusion, just see the "Serenity" manga thread and what happened there. Just a thought. one my favorite webesites to go look for books is at .... christianbook.com They have pretty much everything and even some classic stuff. Still worth a check. :)

I was surprised not to see anyone suggest Ellen Gunderson Traylor. Historical biblical fiction. It's like reading the stories of the bible but in greater detail, like your actually there. I still have a couple of her books, "song of Abraham" and " John son of Thunder"

A good book by Ted Dekker is "Showdown", but as a warning, first few pages are very graphic. After that, not so much.
