I don't identify as a feminist, and I think skirts rule , but I admire this lady's courage.

I cannot wrap my mind around a belief that prescribes violence as a punishment for wearing a certain kind of clothing.

hmmm....if she were a Christian sister, I'd love to have a chat with her about it.


Interestingly, she is *accepting* the consequences of the law, taking the harsher punishment to show how very insane the law is. I think if we feel we must break the law for moral reasons, we should be willing to accept the consequence, which she is. I admire that.

As a Christian I think modesty is essential. However, I think beating or killing women for "shameful" behavior (like wearing pants) is wicked.

It seems that her stance is against the laws that require hitting as punishment, not against wearing pants.

The focus on wearing pants and/or other types of "questionable" clothing is a diversion of her real issue with Sharia law---the violence that it abdicates.

Although it did not involve criminal punishment for doing so, not very long ago, pants were considered man's clothing in the West, and not appropriate for women to wear.

Your right, my post is vague. I was trying to point out that in our western culture punishments such as lashing are wrong, violent and considered punishment not suited to the crime. No, I do not approve of the violence of this punishment.

I know I'm not Maggie, and forgive my interruption. She maintains that she broke no law within the Quaran...that the law forbidding pants for women was a perversion in the face of her religion and a twisted interpretation of same.

She is a very brave lady.

I rejoice I live in a country with a western way of thinking. Where a wife can become more educated than her husband and wear the pants in the family as well. If I love my wife as I do my own body, lashes for wearing pants are out of the question. What's somewhat scary is that this is a nuclear country.

While I understand the belief, and am one of those loony nuts who wears only dresses and skirts myself, I still do not see how such a transgression could justifiably translate into "beat the woman!".

Although she may have breached cultural mores, she maintains she did not breach Koranic law. And that seems reasonable since actually many Muslim women wear bifurcated clothing in the form of salwar kameez (which are loose pants with a long tunic and are quite modest and feminine). Her "crime" was apparently in the style or level of modesty.
