Figured it was just a matter of time before somebody tried this.

You have to be kidding me?!? I have been intrigued, fascinated, and entertained by Sir Doyle's Sherlock Holmes since I graduated from picture books to word books. When I found out Holmes was getting a big-budget film treatment, I was elated.

ORIGINAL CONTENT REMOVED IN LIGHT OF A BIT OF RESEARCH

*******************EDITED TO ADD:
I'm not finding a lot of "gay" references in actual descriptions of the movie around the web. In fact, Kelly Reilly portrays the character Mary, Watson's love interest in the film. Rachel McAdams plays the same role to Depp's Holmes.

I think Medved may have missed the boat on this one. I even scoured some gay sites to see what the homosexual community was thinking, and there is really no substantial evidence that Holmes and Watson engage in "gay" activity, save ONE comment by Downey Jr. earlier this year about "two men who live together, wrestle a lot and sometimes share a bed"...

Here is a bit from gawker.com entitled "How Gay is Guy Ricthie's Sherlock Holmes?", from folks who actually read the movie script:
quote:

http://gawker.com/5330061/how-gay-is-guy-ritchies-sherlock-holmes

Well, we got a hold of a copy of a script to see just how gay it is, and to Medved's relief (or secret disappointment?) there's no scenes of Holmes and Watson going Brokeback. Our version is dated March 18, 2008, so it may not be the final, final revision. But the only explicit sex mentioned is a half-naked post-coital shot of Downey and Rachel McAdams in bed. That doesn't mean, of course, that Ritchie didn't direct his actors to give the Holmes-Watson dynamic some sexual tension. Here's the script's gayest moment — a scene that comes early in the movie when Watson tells Holmes that he's getting married. I could see how it could be played gay, but be your own judge.

I don't know... it isn't outside of the realm of possibilities, but I don't see the money-men for this big budget film based upon a franchise that has been beloved world over for over 100 years almost guaranteeing a box-office flop by reinventing the main characters as homosexuals.

Huh. Well, that's disappointing. Up until I read that article I was kind of looking forward to seeing that movie - not so much now. I agree with the guy in the article that says that they will be cutting out 2/3 of their audience by playing the "gay card". How many people really want to watch Jude Law and Robert Downey making out? Some people will, I guess ... but not most.

Sigh... it simply won't work... those who love Conan Doyles work will never accept it... bad enough when he was brought into the 30's and 40's.

I think it is not the 'engaging' but the suggestion that will be enough to turn people off.

Not to mention the fact... RDJ doesn't even look like Holmes...

That is just it though... I have been looking through the March script myself and don't really find even "suggestion". Lots of fighting, more of a "supernatural" villain to match Holmes' fabled skill, but nothing homoerotic, at least not in print.

Also, who is RDJ?

RDJ = Robert Downey Jr

Having just seen a trailer, there's a scene where Holmes is handcuffed to a bed (one assumes in a hotel) when a maid comes in to clean.

HAHAHAH what a tool am I. I know the actor is Robert Downey Jr., but for some strange reason I keep calling him Johnny Depp and your RDJ initials totally caused me to draw a blank... weird!

Feel a little relieved, though the description mentioned in the article Manimal found still would cause me to want to back off (that, and I'm not particularly enthused about seeing a movie made by Madonna's latest ex)

I know it's wrong to judge a movie by its trailer, but I have a bad feeling about this movie. Holmes as a bed-hopping action hero? Watson slugging him?

Uh, yeah...I think that Madonna may have lobotomized Guy Ritchie's muse. Either that, or Michael Bay is directing the film and using Ritchie's name as an alias.

As do I. RDJ is really hit or miss, and I think this will be a miss.

Robert Downey isn't my concern here. It's the script he's working from.

I guess my hope is that the weighty canon of Sherlock Holmes made some impact on this adaptation.

Like the fire needs more fuel, I know...

Hollywood Wants Gay Sherlock Holmes

quote:

Director Guy Ritchie is filming a new Sherlock Holmes tale with a twist — the detective and his sidekick Dr. Watson have a gay relationship.

Robert Downey Jr., who plays Holmes, says his character will sleep with Watson, played by Jude Law, in "Sherlock Holmes," according to the New York Post's Page Six column.

Jazz, you know I love ya, but I gotta call a timeout on your post You didn't read any of my earlier posts, did you, you naughty poster you.

The article you provide is nearly verbatim the other links already provided. They are all based off of ONE quote from Downey Jr., "We're two men who happen to be roommates, wrestle a lot and share a bed". There is no indication that there is a sexual relationship between Watson and Holmes. This was most likely a joke on the media by Downey, who wanted to create some buzz for the film.

I have been reading the script. Watson and Holmes are intimately close friends (a la Jonathan/David), and think nothing of having to sleep in the same bed next to each other. That's it. Watson announces his engagement to his female girlfriend. Holmes reopens a relationship with a past female lover.

Like I said earlier, I didn't see anything in even the gay blogs that was based off of anything except Downey's purposely worded tongue-in-cheek statement.

If I am wrong, then the supposed homo sex has been kept under tight lock and key, because none of the script revisions I have looked at have such a thing.

The idea of even a hint at homosexuality totally outrages me. This is great literature, for crying out loud. Would they do this to Shakespeare? Dickens? Poe? I think not.

Robert Downey, Jr. make a flippant off the cuff remark that was a joke. As for the others, there are many who argue that Shakespeare has homosexual allusions in both his plays and sonnets. It is a judgment call but I can see some merit in some of the thoughts.

No one can take Basil Rathbone's characterization of Sherlock Holmes away from me.

I still like Guy Ritchie's BMW M5 commercial, "Star"--Hilarious!

Ah, the Great Basil Rathbone vs. Jeremy Brett Debate! (I'm a Brett fan, but Rathbone has his place in our hearts.)

No debate...I worked in a second run movie theatre and saw all the BR's Holmes movies on the silver screen. Atmospheric, moody, sinister, utterly frightening.

Jeremy Brett was a wonderful actor and I thoroughly enjoyed the Grenada productions as well.

Yes, you can't really compare oranges and apples. The Granada series was faithful to the canon and also the era. Rathbone's films were updated to the forties, and many were about the war.

Ah - if only the Rathbone/Bruce films had been set in 19th century England. That would have been the best of both worlds. I love Rathbone as Holmes, and I love the setting in the Brett films. As to Bruce or Hardwicke as Watson, both have their strong points, but I think I like Hardwicke a bit more.
