ORIGINAL: DaveW Ah - if only the Rathbone/Bruce films had been set in 19th century England. That would have been the best of both worlds. I love Rathbone as Holmes, and I love the setting in the Brett films. As to Bruce or Hardwicke as Watson, both have their strong points, but I think I like Hardwicke a bit more. Dave, how about David Burke (Granada's first Watson)?

Dave, how about David Burke (Granada's first Watson)? Not familiar with his work, sorry. I have a set of S.H. DVDs with several different casts. I will have to look and see if he is on any of them. Several epis (late 50s) have Holmes being played by a Ronald Howard. Him I don't like.

I don't like Ronald Howard as Holmes either. There have certainly been some stinkers. Arthur Wontner was a good one (long ago).

ORIGINAL: dbark Huh. Well, that's disappointing. Up until I read that article I was kind of looking forward to seeing that movie - not so much now. I agree with the guy in the article that says that they will be cutting out 2/3 of their audience by playing the "gay card". How many people really want to watch Jude Law and Robert Downey making out? Some people will, I guess ... but not most. That was my feeling as well, when I saw the movie posters I was immediately intrigued, but now I am simply disgusted!

Did you miss the part of article where the guy said that Downey and Law must be joking because it would alienate 2/3 of the audience? Downey has a history of messing with people like this. He jokes alot.

Having just seen a trailer, there's a scene where Holmes is handcuffed to a bed (one assumes in a hotel) when a maid comes in to clean. I know it's wrong to judge a movie by its trailer, but I have a bad feeling about this movie. As do I. RDJ is really hit or miss, and I think this will be a miss. -Dan. Agreed, could be hit or miss. On the positive side (for the movie, but not for RDJ) - I think the role of Holmes needs to somewhat dysfunctional in an idiot-savant sort of way. The more recent PBS series I think captures that aspect of Holmes brilliantly. RDJ's naturally occuring dysfunctions could be a benefit.

Does anyone know WHICH Holmes story this movie is based on? I would love to see a current technology version of Hound of the Baskervilles.

I thought I would be interested in possibly seeing this but, after viewing the trailers, no thanks. It does not honor the original character as portrayed in the books... I will stick wither Jeremy Brett, who, in my opinion was the best portrayal of Mr. Holmes. C

The reason I don't want to see this movie has nothing whatsoever to do with anything gay. I just think they completely destroyed the characters of Holmes and Watson.

I just shake my head in sadness. These days there doesn't seem to be such a thing as respect for long-revered and much beloved literary characters.
