quote:

How does one rebuke, with all longsuffering? It would seem these two words, rebuke and longsuffering, are contradictory. If you rebuke you can't be longsuffering. So which is it?
I think you are assigning the wrong definitions to both rebuke and longsuffering. To rebuke someone means that you point out an action or attitude that needs to change, in no uncertain terms. Longsuffering means to help them walk thru the process no matter how long that takes, and not just rejecting them or removing them from fellowship.

Neither option of ignoring the problem or just kicking them out helps the person to walk in maturity and freedom. Rebuking them with longsuffering does.

Ezekiel 34 is great, but it speaks figuratively. To see what it means in more practical terms, look to the Good Shepherd that it prophesied of. How did Jesus Christ fulfill the prophecy?

There is a difference between pastor and preacher. A preacher's job is to present God's message to his hearers. A pastor's job is to serve, to become involved one-on-one with his sheep, to act lovingly, compassionately, as well as sternly. Jesus is the role model for pastors. He gave His own life for the sheep. Of course, if the pastor is also a preacher, that's even better.

When our church needed a new pastor several years ago, we sought one who was primarily a pastor, not a preacher. God provided someone with a pastor's heart, who was Christ-centered, and now the church is growing stronger in ways it hadn't before. Both the children's ministry and wednesday night prayer meeting/Bible study are growing faster than ever, and there's greater unity not only within our local body, but also with the town's Baptist church.

My very first day to sing with the phenomenal band a church, I had my phone in my back pocket, and the alarm went off. I kept singing while I reached back and tried to hit the off switch. So finally, I took the phone out and threw it towards the back of the stage... it popped open and was much louder. I left the mic, picked up the phone, opened a door and tossed it back there. I returned to the mic and continued to sing while everyone, including me, giggled. It was a terrible mistake on my part, but it was human. We all had a good laugh and I never brought my phone to the service again.
