Trish, if you're not overly worried about using chemical fertilizers, give your garden a shot of Miracle Gro. It really does do wonders.

Yes, I'm feeding all of the plants. We put in some slow release fertilizer in when first setting things up. I've been watering them from time to time with watered down fish emulsion.

I think a lot of it was just that we weren't getting much in the way of sunshine, and therefore, no bees. We've had a bit more sunshine in recent days, which I'd say has brought the bees too. Things are slowly looking up.

The silverbeet has been thinned out even more and been planted in several more places. They are taking off like a rocket. The carrots are doing well too.

John's corn is growing well. Other than watering them, he's not having much to do with them right now. He tried doing something with them recently, and had to stop as his right shoulder started giving him more pain. It still hasn't completely healed after his shoulder surgery. He does what he can though.

I've had to prune some of the lower branches today from off of the tomatoes. They weren't looking healthy. Thankfully though, everything else is doing well.

John and I have been wondering if the smaller tomato plant that is ringbarked would only ever have one tomato on it. The band of ringbarking is only half the size of the rest of the stem.

Anyway, as has become my custom, I went looking at my little 'garden', particularly the tomatoes. The tomatoes are slowly getting bigger. The two big tomatoes, (the ones that grew first), are still green. Today I was shocked to see a little tomato on the smaller tomato plant. YAY! Well, we need wonder no more. I'm hoping some more tomatoes will come from that plant too, but for now, knowing that there's another one starting to grow, I'm happy.

Have had to put some powder over the tomato plants. I've been finding little bugs crawling over the leaves. We could do without those.

Anybody know why the leaves on my tomato plants are yellowing and getting spotty? Not all of the leaves are this way. It's getting plenty of water. I've put powder on it to stop bugs attacking it. It's getting plenty of sunlight. I've pruned the really bad leaves and put them in the bin so that if there's some kind of infection, it won't infect the rest of the plants. I'm still getting tomatoes, so that side of things is ok.

There are two types of tomato plants, determinate and undeterminate. Determinate type plants will yield one crop and then die off. Sounds like that's what's happening. Undetermintae plants will keep going until the weather kills them off. My beefsteaks were determinate, they fruited once and then died. My grape tomatoes are still hanging in there. If you know what variety of tomatoes you have planted you may be able to find out on the internet what type they are.

They're mini Roma tomatoes.

Was just talking to John tonight. He was saying that some of the plants that he's transplanted out of the box and into the garden, (the silverbeet), are doing much better in the garden than the box. They're much bigger.

I was talking about getting some more seedlings and boxes and starting some more planter boxes. He's concerned at the amount of money that I'm spending, and how things like the tomatoes aren't growing as well as they could be, (if they were in the ground, not the box). We've got some garden close to a retaining wall. John's going to clear that area out, and the next seedlings will go there. I chose boxes as they're easier for me than having to bend right down into the garden. Where we will put these plants, it will be like a raised bed. Easier for me to do things in. So, it sounds like I won't be buying any more boxes for the patio.

Trish, the yellow and brown spots on the lower leaves of the tomato plants could be early blight which is a disease common to tomatoes. There is a fungicide spray for it and you could probably get it at a farm and garden supplier.

Thanks Meg. Sounds like what it is. I've been putting a powder on the plant from about 2 weeks after I planted them which is supposed to combat early and late blight. I can't understand why it is the way it is.

Yesterday the tomato plants weren't looking too good. When I looked at them today, the two largest tomatoes have definitely changed colour. They're almost completely red now, so they are definitely ripening. Even on the smallest tomato plant, there's actually another tomato growing on there. Joan found it before I actually got there to look.

We've decided to get some tomato plants and put them into the actual garden. No more garden boxes. Our household eats a lot of tomatoes, so we'll end up eating all of our produce one way or another. The garden area we will use is raised, so it will be a lot easier for me than an un-raised garden bed. Will get the tomato plants soon.

Guess who picked the first of her tomatoes today? WOOHOO!

John's got some corn in the garden. They're getting quite big now. The corn won't be ready for a while, but considering when John put the seed in, you couldn't see anything, it's looking good now!

Bill, I totally agree that vegetables that you've grown yourself taste a whole lot better than store bought. Had some of my tomatoes today for lunch. Yum!

Pruned some of the leaves on the tomato plants that weren't looking so healthy. The actual fruit is doing ok though. The numbers of tomatoes on the plants continues to grow. Will take them some time before they'll be ready to eat, but that's ok.

The largest of the 2 tomato plants has had to be staked. Even though they are miniature sized tomatoes for pots growing on patios, the largest one needed some help. The tomatoes are getting more sunlight now and more air between them.

The smaller plant hasn't been staked. It's not big enough to warrant it. It's still managing to grow more tomatoes though.

We've decided that we're going to put some tomato plants into the garden. Either 5 or 6. We all are tomato lovers in our household. We'll eat most of them, and what we can't eat, we'll give away.

John put some beans in the garden today, in behind some of my silverbeet that was a bit crowded in the box I'd been growing them in.

John's corn is growing really well too. I wonder how long it will be before we can eat those.

The corn here usually starts to roll in in late July, so I'd figure you should be picking some mid to late November.

That sounds good to me!

John just planted the beans yesterday, so it'll be a while before we start eating those.

I've had to cut a lot of the leaves off as they've got funny markings on them, like they are diseased. Thankfully on both plants, there has been a lot of new, young growth. I was beginning to think that there wasn't going to be any plants left if I took all the diseased looking stuff off. The new growth is looking really healthy, so hopefully all will be well. Would hate for all my plants to die.

Still getting new tomatoes growing on the plants. There are still new shoots coming out too. I'm going to have to prune a little bit more of the leaves off to make sure any disease that's on there will be taken away. By the time the new growth really starts growing, we should really have decent sized plants growing out there. The tallest one has already been staked, but I think it's going to have to be staked tighter as it's begun to lean again.

I counted the number of tomatoes on my plants today. There's 17 on there at the moment. Even the smallest of the plants has got some new tomatoes on there. Was beginning to think that there wouldn't be any more fruit on that plant. I'm glad I was proved wrong in that department. One of the tomatoes is even reddening. It's still not that big yet, but it's still reddening.

Well, we are at the stage where we are able to harvest a little bit of everything.

The silverbeet we have been eating for quite some time now.

We pulled out some of the baby carrots yesterday and they'll be getting eaten soon.

We've taken some more of the tomatoes off the plants, starting a number of weeks ago. Others are ripening really quickly, and it won't be long before they come off the plant and get eaten.

I don't understand what John and Joan were talking about. The more fruit we take off the tomato plants, the more will grow? Why? In any case, there will be several tomatoes that will be ready to pick in the next few days. Hopefully we'll get a whole lot more coming after the ripe ones are picked off.

We've got a bunch of tomatoes on the vine that are reddening up really well. We'll be bringing them in by the masses in the next few days.
