Who compiles these One-Hit Wonders lists? I was watching VH1 Classic recently and a few bands easily had more than one hit. The most blatant one, though, was the group White Lion. They had 2 songs in the top 10 in 1987 ("Wait", "When The Children Cry"). And they consider them a one-hit wonder? I guess we're not suppose to take one-hit wonder literally? Anyone else find this poor research annoying?

Kajagoogoo, Katrina and the Waves, Quarterflash, Jesus Jones, Toni Basil, etc. Now these are one hit wonders!

Jimi Hendrix is considered a one hit wonder, but what a wonder he was!

The same with Billy Ray Cyrus. They have him listed as a OHW and he isn't. True, he's mostly known for Achy-Breaky Heart, but he did have other hits, like Could've Been Me.

Not to mention a major come back his show "Doc" and riding the waves of his daughter's popularity. "Don't Go" is a great tune.

I imagine the reason was the fact Acy-Breaky Heart is the only song he ever did most people can think of. I did not know he had ever had any more hits after one! I did a little looking and most of the VH-1 list actually did have more than one hit...but just one. And then they/he/she just fizzed out. The only reason I know that Billy Ray is even still alive is because of his daughter...

Maybe if all of a band's hits came from one album, it might be considered a OHW? That stretches the definition, but seems plausible.

Maybe we should also consider whether a band had other hits outside the US? Take A-Ha for example. They had one US hit, but were huge for a while in the rest of the world. And yet they are still referred to as a one hit wonder.

A-ha also had their follow-up song to "Take On Me" chart at #20 on Billboard - "The Sun Always Shines On TV". So, they're not a one-hit wonder either. I've seen Crowded House on these One-Hit Wonder charts, too. But they had two songs in the top ten, also. "Don't Dream It's Over" (#2) and "Something So Strong" (#7). Also, "Better Be Home Soon" almost cracked the Top 40 at #42.

The Romantics "What I like about you" I would consider a one hit wonder even though the band's song "Talking in my sleep(?)" got, as I remember, considerable play on MTV (when they used to play nothing but videos instead of lame reality shows).

"Talking In Your Sleep" was a smash and is actually their highest charting song. "What I Like About You" just happened to become more well known because of it's placement later in commercials, sports events, etc. But, when it came out as an official single in 1980, it didn't chart nearly as well as "Talking In Your Sleep" did in 1983. But, this definitely disqualifies them from "one-hit wonder" status.

I bet that "What I Like About You" has been played more times in various venues be it radio, DJs, sports venues, 80's clubs more than "Talking in Your Sleep". Yes...got it...that's why I said "What I Like About You" just happened to become more well known. But the point I was trying to make is calling the band a one hit wonder doesn't make any sense given "Talking In Your Sleep" is still a very well known song and was an obvious hit for them in the 80s.

Kind of like with Flock of Seagulls. In the US, I Ran was their popular song. Yet in the rest of the world, Space Age Love Song was their big hit. And arguably, a much better song. Nevertheless, A-Ha are better now than they ever were. Analogue was a fantastic album. This coming from a 25 year-old. I think Reagan somehow created an oxygen deficiency in the 80's that lapsed over into VH1's lists. Or maybe it was all that hairspray.

ORIGINAL: mapachito13 BTW, what did they say was his "one" hit. My money is on "Purple Haze". But then, they didn't listen to the rest of "Are You Experienced" which is like one big Hendrix greatest hits album. "All Along the Watchtower" That was the only SINGLE to reach #20 or above on the US Bilboard pop chart.

ORIGINAL: Market42Fan Toy Soldiers? Does that count? Markita's follow-up "More Than You Know" reached the Top 40 as well. I heard Rick Springfield got a call once asking him to appear on a One Hit Wonder show. Now that is a big misnomer if I could ever think of one.
