Defending UT doesn't require a number one defense. The slim chance UT has is based on keeping the score down.

Actually they currently are ranked number one on looks. As in polsters "looking" at last years team. Unless of course you feel that playing the twin powerhouses Charleston Southern and Troy are a true gauge on how good a team may be.

I can't believe that So. Cal got beat by Washington! I thought that they might be beaten later on in the season, but to lose to the Huskies? Inconceivable! And for Va. Tech to beat Nebraska that late in the game, especially after the Huskers defense had played so well, I was shocked. Yes, I know that the Tebows beat the Vols, but it wasn't the walkover that so many people were picking.

I tuned into ESPN2 for the WVU - Auburn game, and was stunned to learn that it's in a weather delay. What's up down there in AL? Is it a monsoon or something? I may turn on the Mountaineer radio broadcast to get more details. Say, WarEagleKid? Are you still around? I'm waiting for your answer about the Posting wager.

All the big mouths and experts expected the gators to hang 40 or 50 points on the Vols.

Didn't happen...Tennessee's defense played a great game, sacking Tebow I believe three times, intercepting one of his passes and causing him to fumble once.

The Vols lost...but I never did believe that 29 point underdog garbage. I think the rest of the country saw today that Florida is beatable.

I'm proud of the VOLS!

That may well be true, but not by Tennessee, not this time. It's true that anyone can be beaten on any given day, and I would never be so pesumptious as to guarantee an undefeated season for the Gators. I still think they are truly the #1 team in the country, and until they are defeated, I'll' hang on to that.

My 2 teams, WVU and Marshall, are busy prepping for the upcoming campaign. The Mountaineers should be the class of the Big East (Notice I said should.) again this year...

What is this "again" stuff you are saying? In case you forgot, my Cincinnati Bearcats won the Big East title last year, and are making a good case for repeating again this year (with good road wins at Rutgers (45-15) and this past Saturday night at Oregon State (28-18, and they haven't lost to a visiting non-conference opponent since 1996)). It seemed like all the preseason Pub.s wrote the Bearcats off this year (again). But those of us who have watched this team know better. We may not win the Big East (though I think we will), but I don't see how the Bearcats will finish 4th or 5th like they predicted.

I'm looking at a final record of 11-1, possibly 10-2.

That's OK, as long as we finish 12-0 or possibly 11-1.

Possible stumbling blocks: Colorado (home), So. Florida (away), Cincinnati (away).

Just as long as we have that straightened out...

Florida is obviously a good team, but my point is this. Their first real test of the season demonstrated to me that they aren't going to blow everybody out. Which is exactly what the so called "experts" were predicting to happen against Tennessee.

Anybody can steamroll a creampuff opponent (Alabama proved that Saturday) but when the SEC teams start beating each other up weekly, there are going to be some reckoning.

Alabama beat up on North Texas, dude. That's not much to brag about and shows a lack of understanding on the part of the voters who wanted Bama ranked over UT...in my humble Longhorn opinion, of course.

Kiffin had a good plan offensively, given they had nothing. Kept the score down. I've never seen Vol fans so happy about losing. Shows you how low the program has sunk. Kiffin is tanking this year at QB. There is no way any coach should be sticking with Crompton. There is no excuse now for not playing Nick Stephens. Or else, just go with the single wing and punt on third down.

Let me correct you my good man! No one in Vol nation is happy about losing. There are no moral victories. But given the "experts'" opinion that the Vols would lose by at least 30 points, that they might as well not show up for the game, it was a pretty dadgum good performance.
The fact is, the Vols looked good against the Gators.

Tennessee's defense, in my opinion, will write the book on the Vols' season this year. Your assessment of the quarterback situation is sort of right...but not entirely. If you don't show confidence in your guy, he'll never progress. Stevens played some last year and didn't do much. I think Kiffin will stay with the run game (a bright spot in the offense), and limit Crompton to short, manageable passing situations.

This is a rebuilding year for the Vols, but I think they'll end up with a good season.

Mike

Defense and a running game will win against less talent, sure. But Kiff is obviously attached to Crompton in some strange way. If he hasn't got some confidence by now, it ain't happening. The kid is a head case, sad to say. Why not give Stephens a shot? What's the worst that can happen? Throw a few int's? Not gonna get worse, my friend. Kiffin may just be using Crompton as a recruiting tool to get the next big 5-star QB to commit, knowing he'll get a shot fast.

The O-line showed it can run block. Hardesty and Brown can run. The defense is strong. All that's misssing is a passing attack. It's hard to know what receiver quality is since Crompton can't hit one past seven yards.

Sounds like the kind of guy the Browns will draft.

hasn't been just this week but last few weeks Alabama been getting more first place votes

AP Top 25
Week 1: both received 2 votes
Week 2: UT (1) and Bama (2) however USC, the media darlings, also received 1 (presumably the TX vote) after beating Ohio State
Week 3: UT (2) and Bama (3)

Alabama also hasn't played a conference game yet...They did beat VA Tech who was ranked #7 at the time--and earned the same number of first place votes as TX who played a weak team that week.

Tenn has something Fla does not- and that is integrity and class. I would choose the Vols over the gator's anytime.

It was funny to see usc lose and amazing to see Va Tech beat Nebraska. That one is going to be talked about for many, many years to come in Blacksburg. Taylor is an amazing QB. His 81-yard bomb was like a lightening rod.

I suppose that class could be said to be in the eyes of the beholder, and anyone is free to choose who they like. However when saying Florida has no integrity, one might need to check one's dictionary for definitions.

Well, "Kiffin" and "class" tend to not go well in the same sentence unless discussing a reunion.
