My faves include: Model Engine (Black Eyed Sceva), Seven Day Jesus, The Prayer Chain, Dime Store Prophets, Echoing Green, Adam Again, Mike Knott, LSU, Fold Zandura (Mortal), and others... I like all of these except for 7DJ....and I was only a moderate fan of Echoing Green, BES/Model, and Dime Store. Everything else here is solid. They don't make them like that anymore. I walked into a Christian bookstore for the 1st time in 8 or so months to try and get the new Starflyer 59 (which they didn't even have), and it was depressing...a wasteland (just me stating an opinion based on my own tastes). You might like a lot of the Northern Records and Velvet Blue artists if you are into older alt-rock.

I couldn't even find it online on some of the Christian Bookstores! What the heck! Who stocks these stores? I very rarely visit Christian Bookstores anymore when I'm looking for music. They don't stock any of the alternative labels like Northern Records, Velvet Blue, and other smaller indie labels. No creatviity at all.

Who stocks these stores? For the most part, distributors like Provident Music. They're a bastion of bland. I work in a Christian book store, and our music buyer has forgotten more about Christian music than I'll ever know. There are things he just plain can't get because it's not handled by any of the major distributors. We get a discount of around 45% from the big distributors. That allows us to make a profit and still keep the prices reasonable (average $14.98 except for Sony owned labels). But more and more artists are going the indie or small distributor route because the big guys aren't interested in different. That eliminates our discount, or lowers it to the 10-20% range. If we stock those type of cd's we have to mark them up to ridiculous prices ($18.98 for a single cd) in order to make even a small profit. So it's just not good business to stock up on expensive cd's that aren't going to move off the shelves as quickly. At our store we'll try to special order anything you want, but you have to ask or we'll never know.

Their album on 5 Minute Walk was excellent, though! I wore out the CD and had to buy another (which is not easy to do with CDs). I was lucky, though, and found my second copy in a discount bin at Wal-Mart for $5.00. Good thing I wasn't looking for Green Day, right?

Actually, it's the first one that I had a hard time digesting the most because of Brian McSweeney's over-emotive emo-soul vocals. Listening to songs like "A Time to Heal" and "Forgive Me", the guy makes Chris Carabba sound like Henry Rollins. On the second record, which was obviously Forefront-ized, things didn't get much better, but his voice was better suited for that style. I did hear the stuff he did with the band Matthew on their CD Everybody Down, and some of it sounded decent I guess. But yeah 7DJ - not my cuppa. But hey to each his own...

I love LSU / Mike Knott, Echoing Green and Mortal and I always kinda meant to check out Prayer Chain, but never really got around to it. Other alternative stuff I loved: globalwavesystem blackhouse choir in a lonely place caul
