I had the opportunity to get an advanced copy of Mitch Albom's latest book, HAVE A LITTLE FAITH. I don't know if any of you have had the chance to read it yet, but when it comes out I highly suggest you get a copy!

In his latest book (his first non-fiction book since TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE), Mitch Albom tells the story of two people: A Christian minister and his childhood Rabbi. Both men, in their own way, teach us about what it means to believe with all of your heart and soul. And also that FAITH - no matter what the religion - is an important part of ALL of us.

As is the case with all of Albom's book, this one will leave your heart a little fuller than when you started. I can't recommend it highly enough.

If you HAVE read the book, I'd love to discuss it with you here! One question Mitch poses that I think is worth pondering is: If you had 5 minutes to spend with God, what would you ask him?

Your thoughts?

Tuesdays With Morrie is one of the best books I've ever read. I can only wish I'd face death with such dignity. Mitch Albom is a wonderful storyteller. I'll be sure to pick up a copy of the new one when it's released.

I like his columns. I think he is still soul searching in his books though.

eta. I haven't read them yet. I watched the movie of "Five People". I might pick up his latest book.

I already read Mitch Albom's Tuesdays with Morrie, and the story was so touching. You'll really grasp something to it. A must read, indeed. ;)

I just read a Parade (Sunday paper magazine) article by Albom. I've also read one of his books. I was not impressed.

I think Albom is himself confused and only confusing others. IOW, it doesn't matter what you believe but just that you believe. Or have faith yet the what, the why, or the Who does not matter.

Albom needs our prayers. His voice is being heard by many. And they are hearing lies.

Well, it IS an important part of every person, but "faith" in the wrong thing is still damnable.

This doesn't do much for me.... I don't care much for emotional warm fuzzies, I care for truth. I get warm fuzzies from truth.

I might read it, and if I do I will return here. However, I probably won't read it as it sounds like just another feel-good book full of relativistic and ultimately worthless universal religious pap worthy of the garbage heap. If I wanted feel-good worthless pap, I would tune in to Joel Osteen.

Convince me otherwise, and maybe I'll read it.

Mitch has a heart. He would be the neighbor who stops to help you when you've been beat up. he also doesn't have a really solid grasp of the intricacies of Christian faith, though he got a good dose of it's Jewish origins from Morrie. he always lifts my heart but also saddens it in not "getting" the deeper truths. In not, to my knowledge, being saved. Yeah, there's some pap. I've heard Luckado called that, too.

And, manimal, I doubt if he'll miss you not reading his stuff, nor is it up to me to convince you to. I wouldn't even suggest it. Like I say, it's for the heart. You might try Morrie, though, in case you ever have to care for an invalid or an aging parent. That will help you understand some of what they and you will go through.

No doubt Christ was accused of pap when he suggested the poor were worth many sparrows.

I was just browsing through and found this thread. I love Mitch Albom. I have read Five people you meet in heaven and One More Day. They are some of my favorite books and yes, I will be reading his new one. I hope it will be coming to the library soon (can't afford to buy more books) but any way I am glad I came across this thread. One thing I wanted to add is that Mitch's books are listed as fiction books and not as gospel books. I think Mitch has done a wonderful job at getting people thinking about religion. No, he doesn't add the specifics but that's the purpose behind his writings.

Mitch Albom is an unsaved man who promotes the warm-fuzziness of universalism. He met some kindly Jews and a few decent Christians who gave him warm-fuzzies, and now wants other people to have warm-fuzzies. Oprah Winfrey probably loves him! He doesn't preach Jesus Christ, he doesn't teach the Bible, he promotes good feelings! He is not a Christian and has absolutely no spiritual insight of any worth to a Christian!.

Here is his latest from his interview on Craig Ferguson last night (10/12/09) (transcribed by me, almost to the word):

CRAIG: Are you content and at peace?

MITCH ALBOM: Noooot.... all the time, but working at it.

CRAIG: I'm not, I'm restless (audience laughter)...

MITCH ALBOM: I've observed that about you...

CRAIG: ...I'm restless like some sort of sexy vampire! (audience laughter). So, you know you're going to get yourself in trouble by writing a book about religion, pal, cause people go crazy about that stuff. Write books about, you know, sports and stuff (audience laughter)

MITCH ALBOM: Well I did that....

CRAIG: Oh, I know...

MITCH ALBOM: ...but you got to say what you have to say and, you know, we spend a lot of time in this world using faith to divide one another and attack one another and say 'I'm better than you' as a result of it... and I think, the truth is it could be something that actually pulls people together. There's a lot more in common about it, if you pay attention to the pure parts, than... than not.

CRAIG: Do you have faith?

MITCH ALBOM: (hesitantly) Yeah, I do.

CRAIG: And faith in what? The hereafter?

MITCH ALBOM: I do... about that... I also have faith that inside everybody is some little spark of divinity, some little spark of goodness, that, um, you know when you feel it and you know when you bring it out in somebody else, and if we just manage to get through all the **** that's on top of it, we could actually build a pretty good world.

CRAIG: What about people... (spontaneous and exuberant audience applause and "whoos!" that interrupt Craig's next question)

CRAIG: I always feel that people that are certain, that give me a problem, and I'll tell you what I mean by that. People who say 'I absolutely know what God wants', right? And I say, well if you absolutely know about God, that he exists, aaaaand you know what he wants, and you KNOW all this stuff, that you don't need faith. Because "faith" is only for people who experience doubt, because if you have no doubt you can't have faith, you have certainty, or (making quotation marks with his fingers) "pathology", but... (audience and Albom interrupt with laughter for several seconds)... in order to experience faith it is necessary for you to experience doubt in order to experience faith, wouldn't you say?

MITCH ALBOM: I agree! And that's... that's what the word means. I mean, faith is, you know, in a sense you're believing in something that you have to take on faith, something that's bigger than you...

CRAIG: I don't even think you have to do that, if you, uh, have difficulty believing in a power greater than yourself, I always thought the best thing to do was jump up and then stay there!

MITCH ALBOM: (Albom LOL's for several seconds, joined by audience) Right!

CRAIG: I mean, if you could do that, you know... well (sarcastically) look at you! But if you can't, there's something at work there that's bigger than you, mister!

MITCH ALBOM: If you could... if you could do that, you can... you can start your own religion!

CRAIG: Exactly!

MITCH ALBOM: Yeah.

CRAIG: Mitch, it's always, it's always a pleasure...

MITCH ALBOM: Wait, wait!

CRAIG: Oh, what?

MITCH ALBOM: I promised you...

CRAIG: I'm wrappin' it up!

MITCH ALBOM: You can't wrap it up... I promised you I would come back with another, uh, sports practice. Last time I was here I promised....

(interview goes into a college football story)

Wow! That guy makes Joel Osteen look like a Bible teaching heavyweight!

I don't see him saying anywhere that his aim is to teach Christianity, or Judaism, or any other belief system for that matter. So he writes feel good books. So what's the big deal?

The big deal is that there are many weak Christians who think that kind of stuff equates to some sort of spiritual truth. The big deal is people are led away from the truth by these universalist Dr. Feelgoods.

I admit I haven't read this book, but knowing Albom I don't need to. It will be another soft push of "I'm ok, you're ok, we're all ok, everyone is a little bit of god and all paths lead to a happy afterlife". Even if his aim is just to get people to "get along", that's a dangerous way to get there.

If I am wrong, I will eat my humble pie and apologize, but based on past Albom stuff and the interview I posted above, I am fairly confident in my conclusion.

I see your point. Don't necessarily agree, as that's the same argument that's used to condemn non-Christian music, books, movies, et al.

Well, if the music pretends to teach something about spiritual truth but is actually in error, then it also needs to be condemned! However, just as there are plenty of entertaining and fun books that don't try to assume the role of spiritual guidance, there is plenty of benign non-Christian music that is enjoyable and not harmful.

I'm quoting myself. Yes, it is fine for people to read Albom. But they won't find answers.

I'd heard so many say good things about his books. I was disappointed. I was looking for truth. It's not there.

So again, pray for him. He needs Jesus as does most of the world.

I love Mitch Albom's writing. I grew up in Michigan, reading his sports columns in the newspapers even though I didn't much care about sports. He's considered a hometown hero here. I haven't read Tuesdays with Morrie, but I did read 5 People you Meet in Heaven. I have For One More Day sitting on my bookshelf waiting to be read.
I don't read them looking for Truth, but more looking for an interesting story and some sort of takeaway nugget.

If you haven't read the books then how can you say you do like him. I know that you were going on what interviews you heard. The books are excellent and are not presented as religious books they are presented as fiction books. You need to read the books and pretend you don't know anything about him and you will be a changed person for it. I have read "The five people you meet in heaven" and it really changed the way I look at things. Not necessarily from a religious view but just from a different view in general.

Fair enough.

To answer your question, my time is precious. I am trying to get through school as a husband and father, and don't have a lot of time to waste on "recreational reading" right now. Therefore, I have to screen which books ultimately make it onto my read list. Judging from Albom's past works which I HAVE read, as well as interviews similar to the one I posted, I have decided that feel-good warm fuzzies couched in spirituality coming from an unsaved universalist is a complete waste of my time.

P.S. I just read an article by Albom in the Saturday Evening Post that was fairly good. It was a short piece about a 90-year-old Rabbi who is a friend of Albom's and his Jewish perspective on forgiveness and refusing to hold on to bitterness against others. Of course the article never points to Jesus Christ, but it contains very good advice regarding forgiveness nonetheless. I wonder how the Rabbi feels knowing that his description of forgiveness is essentially what Jesus taught in the New Testament
