ORIGINAL: gtrdave Thankfully, the Christian Rock of today is so much better than the Christian Rock that I avoided and used to laugh at back in the '80s. Um - where were you when Keaggy was killing everyone? He was certainly no laughing matter. I listened to Phil Keaggy (and Petra and a little Stryper) back in the '80s and while he was (and still is) a fantastic guitarist, a lot of his arrangements were WAY too heavily Beatles-influenced for me and the overall mix/production of his discs (and the great majority of CCM and even country) back then was lacking compared to a lot of the arena rock from the same era. imho, of course. When I want to listen to Phil Keaggy, "Beyond Nature" is my first go-to record. I have Sunday's Child, 220 and a few others, but I rarely listen to them. I need to buy some of his more recent discs...

ORIGINAL: keithyhuntington III is great, II is better. I'd recommend II first :D I always thought set it off sounded like the first 2 limp bizkiy records, and I hated those albums. Limp bizkits "results may vary" is phenomenal though. IMO their ONLY good album. I avoid Limp Bizkit if at all possible, but what I've heard of them and TFK does not cause me to make the comparo that you're making, so... And I'm currently listening to the new Chevelle, "Sci Fi Crimes", and enjoying what I'm hearing so far. Still, few modern bands imho have come anywhere near close to producing music as dynamic, progressive and interesting as Porcupine Tree. I've got to get the first 3 discs still, but everything I have, from Signify to Fear of a Blank Planet and Nil Recurring, is just amazing. I tried to give Mastodon a try recently and...meh.

Phil was in 2nd chapter of acts? Wow. My mom loves him, I remember her always playing Sundays child record when I was like 5? I saw him at cornerstone 2001. It was interesting.

As good as his studio stuff is, in concert he's amazing. I saw him play solo acoustic and there were moments when I laughed out loud from sheer delight. He used that loop thing to sing three part harmonies when he covered "Here Comes the Sun". Literally singing into his guitar and looping it. That's crazy! For a good sampling of his electric work, pick up his "Jammed" cd.

Some of my favorite stuff of Phil's has been the Glass Harp videos up on YouTube. There was a killer version of "Time" that used to be posted up, but I can't seem to find it now, only a more recent version of it. Ah, found it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sy8ZS8bxAuU

ORIGINAL: gtrdave And I'm currently listening to the new Chevelle, "Sci Fi Crimes", and enjoying what I'm hearing so far. They seem incapable of putting out a bad album. "Jars" is, so far, my favorite song. I keep trying to listen to groups like As I Lay Dying, Becoming the Archtype, I Am Legend and come away with the same feeling. I'd love to replace the lead screamer with someone who can sing/scream without it sounding like he's going to spit up his lunch. It sounds too forced unlike an UDO, Rob Halford, Mike Muir, Dave Mustaine, Brian Johnson, James Hetfield, Bon Scott, Jon Oliva, etc. That forced screamo voice sounds exactly the same to me, like you could take the lead singer of AILD and switch him with the guy in BTA and you'd never notice the difference. It's too bad because I usually like the guitar work but then, the screaming starts...... and I change the selection before I myself.

My oldest daughter likes the stuff...August Burns Red, Texas in July, etc...but my wife and I don't dig the vomit-ish sounding screaming.

ORIGINAL: keithyhuntington Phil was in 2nd chapter of acts? Wow. No - not "in" as such. Their back up band (the same one Barry McGuire used) was "A Band Called David," and Keaggy sat in with them as a guest from on occasion. 2nd Chapter started off as McGuire's background singers. Anne Herring's husband Buck was McGuire's producer.

Sorry, but when somebody asks a question that is known to start debates, and then doesn't come back, it looks suspicious.

any form of music that upsets the establishment and the status quo is good. rock music was considered bad because most of the rock stars in the beginning were BLACK. SINCE this was the case, it was labled unacceptable by the mainstream(altleast until Elvis went to the army). Now many pioneers were labled and lied about because Rock music scares stupid and ignorant people. The great Robert johnson was said to have made a deal with the devil in trade for guitar lessons(OH PLEASE). Let`s us not and never forget that since Rock was started by Black people living the the HATEFUL, DEMONIC Jim CROW south(were in some places black people were not even allowed to laugh in public), and if you were BLACK with any form of talent, you were labled a threat(such as Robert johnson). listen to all the rock music you want to.

ORIGINAL: mapachito13 Rock n Roll evolved out of many different style but as this link shows the rock of the 1950's was inspired by many black artists. Elvis may have been the King but he wasn't the first. That's true! Hear's another good article on the subject, which helps to set the record straight: http://www.hoyhoy.com/dawn_of_rock.htm According to the above article, the fushion of blues with gospel played a vital role in the development of rock n roll. This mixture was being worked out by both secular and gospel artists, in some different ways.A perfect example is this recording of Pentecostal church music from the early 60's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLfOjQRRL5g

This makes me think of a Muddy Waters song: "The Blues had a Baby and Named it Rock and Roll." My taste in Rock music is fairly eclectic...last night I was listening to some old Allman Bros, and checked out a video by Primus ("My Name is Mud"). As Chuck said..."Hail Hail Rock and Roll"! Mike
