First my background on "Rock" music-
Like others here I was brought up listening to Rez band, Striper, One Bad Pig (anyone heard of then?), Phil Keaggy, etc... My mom was really into Christian Rock in the 80s-going to concerts, buying records (?!), went to cornerstone, etc...

So I grew up with it and never really knew others had a problem with it. Let me clarify, I never listened to non-christian music, all the bands were Christian and I thought non-Christian rock bands were really bad.

Then when I was getting into my teen years and starting to claim bands and listen to music not just because my mom liked them we started to attend a church where the paster and several of the members were really against rock music.

I'm still attending that church, which I love, and many of the people who don't listen to rock music have become good friends of mine, as well as many who love Chistian rock and go to concerts with me.

So I've had a lot of interesting debates and talks with these friends.

My take is that it's just a kind of music and what matters is the lyrics and the messages your listening to. If it's a harder beat but the same great christian message then that's fine.

As my paster has talked about, the devil was the "music leader" in heaven, so the devil know music and we've got to be careful. We've got to ask ourselves what this music is doing to us. Is it bringing us closer to God? Then great! If it leads us astray (yes, even christian rock), then we need to think about taking that out of our lives. Everything can be good (food is good for you, if you don't eat if you could die) but it also can be bad (bad food, to much of it). That's why people fast, to prove that all they need is God, that Food doesn't have control over them.

Also we need to understand that our choices and beliefs in music is just preferences, not something that we have to have the same belief on to be saved. Like my paster has said, we've got to hold on our preferences with an open hand, but our beliefs... that's what we hold on to with a tight fist and don't let anyone try to change our minds about.

Also, we must be aware of our brothers and sisters preferences on music, etc... Like when I'm in the car with one of my friends who choses not to listen to rock music, I'm not going to pop in my new Thousand Foot Krutch cd* (and throw up my rawkfist ) out of respect for them.

I hope you can understand my ramblings, don't know if this helps, it's just my thoughts on all of this...

Oh, and on the subject of preferences, while I like rock music I'm not into the screamo stuff but my sister loooooovvvvves it. I don't understand how she can stand the stuff...

*For those of you who love and like rock, this is a great cd! Got to check it out if you haven't already. I just got to see them in concert a few days ago! After the concert I was able to talk to the lead singer for a few minutes, he's great! Anyway, I had a great time...

I like this a lot! And what you said makes perfect sense. Except it's spelled preference

Thanks for the correction (I just edited it and corrected the spelling), as everyone is finding out spelling is not my talent.

Thankfully, the Christian Rock of today is so much better than the Christian Rock that I avoided and used to laugh at back in the '80s. I'll take Thousand Foot Krutch, Disciple, Plumb and Flyleaf over Stryper any day.

I think Stryper actualy put out some quality material for the style of music they did (certainly on par with secular groups in their genre). It's just that "hair metal" isn't generally considered cool anymore. And let's not overlook groups like 77's and Vector, who put out some of the best Christian rock albums of the 80's.77's "All Fall Down" album is an absolute rock/new wave classic that has passed the test of time and 100% quality.A number of other examples could also be given.

There was alot more poor quality and mediocre Christian rock in the 80's, compared to the good quality examples. But atleast there was some Christian rock in the 80's that displayed the same excellence as the secular.Unfortunately the same cannot be said for 80's Christian rap, which failed to give even one example that was as good as the secular.Around the same time that the secular world was giving us Public Enemy and Eric B & Rakim, the Christian world was giving us Stephen Wiley and the Rap' Sures (which isn't even close in quality).By the end of the 80's there was P.I.D who were a bit better, but even they paled when compared to tracks like "White Lines" by Grand Masterflash or to the phenomenal early stuff off Tackhead (which has been classified as industrial hiphop).

When the 90's came, there was an increase in quality Christian rock and even more great stuff to pick from. This decade, the Christian groups that appeal to me are generally not on the major Christian labels anymore, but more underground or artists on the Christian fringe.

The 77s are pretty much the best band associated with Christian rock. I could let someone get away with saying Daniel Amos, or maybe even The Choir. But anyone else? I'm pretty sure I can make a pretty convincing argument in the 77s' favor if I wanted to. They pretty much dabbled in every classic rock style that exists. Although they misfired fashionably, lyrically, and musically on occasion, their classic pop songcraft was more than a cut above the rest.

Yep. Those are the top three. All others are at least one level lower, if you know what I'm saying.

SKILLET's "Comotose" is one of my favorite albums of the past 5-years, but a lot of that has to do with the incredible production contained therein. I agree with everyone who has mentioned DISCIPLE as a definite breakout band. I love their latest album.

I've also gotten into GALPIN (http://www.robgalpin.com) which is the new, faith-based project from former FUNNY MONEY (Steve Whiteman of KIX fame) guitarist Rob Galpin. The band is releasing their album "Home Away From Home" track-by-track from now until December '09 on all the digital outlets. I have just been buying the songs on Itunes as they come out (can't wait for Oct. 13th to check out the new one "Missing The Heart"). The last one I got was called "Kansas" and it blew me away. Kind of a mid-tempo rock ballad with an incredible message! I encourage everyone to head over to his website and listen to his music and PLEASE, read his blog entries! They are hilarious looks into the writing and recording process of the tunes where sometimes he'll add a picture of one of his kids walking into his studio and just...well, just being a kid! Priceless!

I like the new one "Awake" better than "Comatose". Comatose was a little overdone IMO. My ultimate favorite Skillet album still remains "Collide". BTW, I've noticed that the NFL is using the song "Hero" in some of its promos.

Disciple started to get noticed by the mainstream when a song from Scars Remain "Game On" was used by WWE (or is it WWF) wrestling. They have quite an extensive discography from "What was I thinking?" to "Southern Hospitality". With their talent they should have broken out years ago!

I like "Awake" too, although the female vocal parts kind of throw me off a bit. I think the reason I like "Comatose" better is because of that overdone production. I'm a gearhead, I guess and still think that Def Leppard's Hysteria is one of the best recorded albums of all time.

I did catch NFL using "Hero" and believe it or not, I actually saw SKILLET play live during halftime at a game about two weeks ago. I think it's great that they are finally getting some attention after over a decade of putting out good music.

BTW-Thanks for the in-depth info on DISCIPLE. I have "Southern Hospitality", but need to check out their others.

Me too Joey!

I too went to a church that had the stance "all rock is of the devil!," it really messed with my head as a result, making me torn between my faith and Christian music. It did turn out that I did in fact have a problem with music myself where it was coming between me and God. I can at least attest that this does not seem to be the case anymore though.

I remember and heard of One Bag Pig, I was a fan of Vector myself.

Christian rap in the 80's was indeed bad, I think that Stephen Wiley was more for kids instead? Then we had DC Talk and ETW (End Time Warriors), they were ok at the time. DC Talk grew into their own in the later years.

Start with their self-titled album (if you can get the DVD-CD special edition of this album with the extra songs) and "This Might Sting A Little". Work your way through "By God" and "Back Again" and if you are still interested fill your collection out with the rest. That band is definitely heading in the right direction musically.

Vector made some great music and the cereal is pretty good to! Can't say I was a big fan of their last album though. It would be nice if they could make a comeback album, one that sounds fresh and current yet having the same energy and quality as their earliest music.

I bought tapes by all those Christian rappers you mentioned, so that's where I misfired musically. That's what happens when your in a musical starvation for Christian rap.But they were never major artists for me.When S.F.C came out with their 1990 album "A Saved Man In the Jungle" that was the best that Christian rap produced at that point (or the best I heard).Even that wasn't as good as the best secular rap, but to this day it remains the only Christian rap tape in my regular tape selection.(I have another tape selection in my closest, mostly rotten tapes I don't want anymore that I don't know how to get rid of).

And I also grew up in the anti-Christian rock 80's, hearing it condemned from the pulpit.Yet they had no problem bringing in a country gospel or Christian bluegrass group for Sunday night.I heard a lot of Jimmy Swaggart in my house at the time, who liked to attack it.But he had no problem with his southern gospel style with it's Nashville country flavor (the kind of sound that came from the secular world of Nashville entertainment music).Christian rock sounded like the world and was therefore worldly, yet his own music sounded like the world and was Godly.

C'mon, guys, four pages in and you haven't even covered the most obvious bases in this theatre of the absurd. So leet's dispense with a few things right off...

Micheal W. Smith uses runic letters on his album covers, so he's involved in the occult.

KISS stands for Knights In Satan's Service.

Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart are lesbian lovers.

Amy Grant flashed the devil horn sign during one concert, so she's on a fast train south as well.

KISS covered a Petra song (actually it was an Argent tune), but it doesn't matter, cause they're all on the dark side.

Point Of Grace are occultic because they covered Earth, Wind, & Fire's tune "Sing A Song".

C'mon, what's your favorite anti-rock cliche'?

AC/DC stands for Anti-Christ/Devil's Child

Which begs the question. What ever happened to the PMRC?

Not exactly rock, but it's roots, Ray Charles was going to lead an entire generation straight to hell for using elements of gospel music to help lay the foundations for R&B/Rock & Roll.

And don't even get me started on Elvis!

Forget about all that and just start spinning Led Zepplin records backwards...

Michael W. Smith had an upsidedown cross on one of his albums, (and since he's such a blatently satanist rock artist) it is straight from the devil.
