One place to start about Racewalking is Racewalking 101.

Speed or distance? I try for a combination. I walk fast almost as fast as I can (4.0-4.5MPH which is fast for most people), but I also try for a minimum of 3 miles four to fives days a week if I'm trying shed pounds and stay in shape. If I cut back the number of miles, I'll have to cut back on calorie intake or I'll gain.

Keep in mind that I only built up to my current speed and distance over time. It took me a full year to lose 25% of excess bodyweight and increase my endurance so that I could do 4-5 miles at one time.

Wow, thank you, Euty, that was very educational! I had figured out the fist thing because when I started walking, I knew I should have arm motion, but it was causing the blood to rush to my hands (ow).

That was one of the first things I noticed when I started using the arm techique - no more swollen hands. It also eliminated lower back pain I used to get around 3 miles. And it definitely helped me increase my speed.

It took a long time to get all the different techniques working together (and I don't always get most of them right) but I've been using the arm thing since first reading about racewalking and it makes a big difference. It may look odd to others but, then, I'm not walking for them.

I had an interesting experience yesterday at the gym. There was a woman jogging on the treadmill next to me at 4.5 MPH, while I was racewalking at 4.5 MPH.

I hate when that happens. I have run so slow on treadmills it isn't funny!

I've accumulated 536 miles walked thus far this year. It should have been much higher, but it's not too bad.

Thats cool. I haven't kept complete track because sometimes I use the treadmill, sometimes I used my garmin outside and I had a cell phone with a GPS. Maybe next year I'll keep one continuous log.

Some seniors were walking at a school today at 5:30 am and saved the building because there was a fire. So there is some benefit from exercising that early. LOL

Eutychus, I was wondering if it "felt" weird walking next to someone who was running, especially at the same rate of speed lol. I know for me, if I'm walking on a treadmill while someone is running or walking next to me, if they are going much faster or much slower than I am, it throws off my balance. It's like my mind can't reconcile what my eyes are seeing with what my legs are doing .

It can be a little distraction if they are making a lot of noise.

What I find even more distracting is that our minister of recreation has contemporary Christian music piped into the weight/mechanical exercise room and in the basketball court. The music is suited for quiet meditation or going to sleep while I'm trying to go at my own pace.

He did compromise and cuts the music off at certain times that I am there, but it makes me feel like I'm perceived as a sorehead when all I want is not to listen to someone else's music - people that want to listen to music own iPods and such...

Sorry for the rant.

When I worked for a chain of women's only health clubs, I had to wear headphones with my own music because all they played over the loudspeaker was dance club music. It drove me nuts. The atmosphere was meant to get you "pumped up" to work out, but it just made me feel hostile .

To me, piped in music, is little different than having to listen to the people who drive around with windows down and their music cranked to the max.

It's their choice of music, not mine. No matter who does the choosing, it's only going to suit certain people.

That is true, you can't please everyone. Bally's had awful piped in music.. either some kind of rock which was almost metal or awful 80s kind of music.. but none had a rhythm.

I could take awful 80s music over techno-dance beats any day lol. I went to the Fitness Center last night and walked about 2 miles. I'm so glad I brought my hubby's Ipod because there was a lady on the elliptical machine next to my treadmill that was talking gossiping on her cell phone about all of her family members THE ENTIRE TIME I was walking. I just turned up the Ipod and her voice magically vanished lol!

I'm amazed that some people can't be unplugged from a cell phone even to exercise...

there was one really talented girl that was able to run while talking on her cell phone.

wait til you go in the bathroom and the person next to you continues to talk the whole time.

I really dislike cell phones, in general, or should I say the lack of courtesy people extend to their surroundings while using cell phones, but I guess that's for another thread.

I do especially dislike people talking on their cell phones while working out; it's like they think they are invisible and on mute because they are conversing with someone they can't see. If I have to use my cell phone in public, I am always very careful what I say out loud.

they are never interesting or important conversations either.

I have been on call before but I always took the call as soon as I could get to a private area.

I walked 25 miles last week, all indoors. That makes 556 miles so far this year.

Eutychus, you've inspired me. After walking 2-3 miles last week, I was thinking that it really motivated me to come here and say, "I walked x miles today".

I'm making a New Year's resolution to log my miles and plot it on a map. I think that will help me stay motivated.

I'm back to the fitness room tonight and I'm going to see how many miles I walk in my own shoes lol.

There is a really nice workout log at runningahead.com. It's free.

It says running but you can add in multiple workouts. I've been using it off and on for a few years. It automatically adds up the miles if you enter them.

Did a few miles today

Something that helps me is to have a race that I'm traning for, and than make a countdown calender for it.
