How much did it cost for the store owner to defend himself (even if s/he may got it back later)? Rhetorical question. The reason most store owners would just hide in the back, because it costs so much... quote:
ORIGINAL: heremainsfaithful I heard of a case like that. The owner came out and banned them from the store. The parents tried to sue, but luckily the store had a camera, and when the judge saw the tape he dismissed their suit.

Actually, a friend of mine from another state (who is a teacher too) was telling me about it. It was some sort of gift shop, and lots of stuff got broken. I don't know too many details, but I loved the idea that the kid's actions at least had some consequence. If I had done that as a kid, I wouldn't have been able to sit down for a week!

Jenn, you and I are on the same page with this. After she and I discussed the situation, I am sure she would keep her hands to herself from then on. Truthfully, I would go ballistic. I am not proud of that but I am sure my momma bear would come to the forefront. I can speak with authority on what I would do in a situation where someone else physically corrected my child, since I have actually had this happen. I am not proud of my actions, but I am reasonably positive that if it were to happen again, I would react in the exact same manner. This was an extended family member who struck my child, and yet, that fact seemed not to register with me at all. As far as the situation in a store/coffee house goes, if I were a customer, I would complain to the owner/manager of the establishment, or at least make them aware. If the activity of the child was truly bothering me, and the owner/manager truly refused to do anything about it, then I would truly leave and take my hard-earned money with me. My husband and I actually left a very expensive restaurant one night because there was a child (around 9 - 10 years of age) who was smacking/kicking/pinching his little brother repeatedly at the next table. Every time he would smack his brother, the younger sibling would scream and howl in a most ear-piercing manner. The parents were there with a group of adults and would just tell the older brother to cut it out. Every. Time. We heard people around us grumbling, but no one said anything at all. After enduring this through our first order of drinks, we informed the waiter, and then when nothing was done, the manager, who didn't even speak to the parents. Then, we explained to the waiter that we were leaving and wanted our check for the appetizer and drinks. Apparently, the restaurant wanted the money from the group more badly than it wanted ours.
