How do you plan for holiday-related spending? (Decorations, Food/Entertaining, gift-giving, travel?) Do you save up ahead of time? Cut back on other things? Or slap it all on a credit card and figure out how to pay it off later? Do you have a Christmas Club Account?

(multiple selections allowed)

I've been saving for tickets home and presents since last year. I have my shopping done and am within budget. I've got presents packed and ready to ship to my parents, so I'm actually ahead of last year.

The biggest expense is the Christmas open house at the studio. I have the catering arranged. The rental people are being tedious, as always.

I buy or make presents through out the year.

It takes almost a month to get a package to my family, so I have to ship early or it doesn't get there until after the holidays (Russian Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar, Christmas is January 7).

In 2002, my church adopted an U.S Army platoon. We regularly send care packages and gifts to the soldiers, and their families. We finished collecting and gathering last week. We pack this weekend, and will be shipping before Halloween.

Next week, our church social project is to make mittens, scarves and hats for the food shelf to distribute. We have been collecting winter boots and jackets since last spring to the same purpose.

I have an international competition the week before Thanksgiving and time is fleeting--That involves 4-5 hours of practice everyday....
dance classes to to teach....
a business to operate....
8 private parties and 9 public venues to perform....
I suddenly (God is generous!) have a suitor....

There isn't enough time before Christmas is upon us.

I did not want to do the santa thing, but my husband did. I wanted to do the 3 kings day which is January 5th and find it more bibical, as the 3 kings (wisemen) brught the Christ child gifts.

Anyhow I will start my shopping for him in about a week or so, but for our friends and family we generally send gift cards, this way they can get what they need or want.

I do not do well in the Christmas rush with folks, some can be brutal over meaningless things..

Sometimes if the Spirit hits me, I will do home- made gifts.

Congrats Belle on the suitor.

CMT - I don't do well with the Christmas rush shoppers. I like to have my space and take my time. Plus, the lines are so long when everyone else is shopping. Blah!

Thanks, MamaAng! He is a wonderful guy.

I'm with you and CMT. The frenzy of day-after-Thanksgiving Day sales makes me very uncomfortable. I enjoy looking at the decorated department store windows, but I wait until the Monday after the shopping tourists are gone.

There is a lot to appreciate and savor during the holiday season. It really can't be given much justice done at a dead run. You have to allow yourself time to be present and cherish your traditions.

BelleWeather and MamaAng~
I absolutely refuse to go out on what they call "Black Friday!" That is just total world chaos! and Every year someone gets hurt some where and for what?! No thanks I pass....

Yes I like enjoying the displays of Christmas, the lights and all. Growing up my parents did the Santa thing, but for me it was hurtful to learn the truth.

This is why I wanted to do something more bibical and practical financially.
3 Kings day which is celebrated in Puerto Rico is on Jan.5th. So it is closer to bibical than Santa, plus you can shop after Christmas and reap on the sales.

Oh and for those who don't know me I am 1/2 Puerto Rican and 1/2 Irish.
(it's okay if you run, most people do, when they hear that combination )

I have heard of people who were hurt with the truth of Santa. I'm sorry that finding out Santa is make believe hurt you, CMT. I have a friend who was hurt and so she told her kids from a young age that Santa was not real. One of her children told her they were upset she didn't allow them to have the imaginary world of Santa. Who knows what is right?

I have nearly always told my son about the story of Saint Nicholas and how he is reflected in Santa. I tell him that if he believes Santa exists then he does. So far, my son is 10, will be 11 next month, and still believes. I'm not sure if that is good or bad.

CMT - I have been in the stores on Black Friday. Oh my gosh, it is nuts. My mom and I couldn't even find a seat at the food court to eat our lunch..... The place was that busy.

Wow, writer that is awesome.

Does anyone else do gift baskets? Any other ideas besides women's personal hygiene type stuff?

This year will my first venture into the world of gift baskets. Might have to rethink that a bit for my sister - I've been planning a Kick Back and Relax themed basket (an antidote to her over-stressed life) but sis announced recently that she dislikes gift baskets as she finds them boring! For her basket, I had planned some women's personal hygiene stuff, in addition to a new CD, a perpetual calender with bible verses for the busy mom etc.

Other gift baskets I'm planning:-

1) A basket of food for DH's two elderly bachelor uncles who are roommates. I've started accumulating the non-perishable items by picking up a few extra things as I do my weekly grocery shopping

2) A beach fun basket - beach pail, inflatable arm bands, sunglasses etc for a little boy on the list

3) Pirates of the Caribbean basket - a puzzle, a POTC story book with accompanying telescope, pirate themed school supplies

4) Creepy Crawly Basket - a book on bugs, plastic bugs, magnifying glass, butterfly net, a plastic container for "capturing" specimens, and a notebook for drawing the bugs etc

What I love about gift baskets is that I can (1) customize the basket to the needs/ interest of the recipient and (2) spread out the cost of the gift by buying a few things every now and then.

I'm not convinced that gift baskets are always cheaper, maybe because I've gone overboard with my perpetual quest to pick up "just one more thing"

I always say I'm going to start shopping for Christmas early, but it fails each and every year. I usually start anywhere from the end of November -- but never on black Friday (that's a scurrry day) -- to mid December.

As for planning financially, we don't really have a budget per say but we definitely won't buy anything on credit. Our Christmas gift buying motto is: If we can't afford it in cash, we don't purchase it.
