The Christian's Guide to Everyday Justice
Hännah Schlaudt

Editor's Note: The following is a report on the practical applications of Julie Dawson's new book, Everyday Justice (IVP, 2009).

How does a Christian to live justly, in imitation of God's justice? What are the practical ways to imitate God's passion for justice and righteousness?

God's justice isn't merely punitive. As a practical outworking of loving God and others, true justice is restorative. True justice represents God's love to those around us, thereby honoring the image of God in people. Christians are called to imitate God's love in every area of life, and living justly reflects this.

Right relationships with those around us are part of just living, but they're not the whole picture. These principles also extend real justice to every area of a lifestyle, taking our focus beyond those with whom we directly interact. For instance, your morning coffee habit doesn't just pay the barista and boost your workplace performance—the farmers growing coffee in Central America may be starving under unfair trade agreements made with your favorite coffee distributor. American Christians must be aware of the larger picture. If you practice an integrated, just lifestyle, you have to make ethical, God-honoring decisions in your consumer habits and how you steward resources.

Some interesting suggestions on how we as Christians can alter our lifestyle in order to live justly.

Be sure to read the article first and then tell us what changes you've made in your life in order to live as God expects... justly.

Start your morning with fair trade coffee. This one was easy for me ... We don't drink coffee.

Buy slave-free chocolate. Also easy -- I'm a diabetic and really can't have chocolate.

Eat organic and locally grown foods. We endeavor to do this, when and where it is feasible to do so. (It helps that we have a Whole Foods store nearby.)

Avoid clothing brands that employ sweat-shop labor. Is there a list out there of brands to avoid? That would certainly make this easier to follow. I tried Googling and ended up with 2 million links and not much guidance about where to start.

Conserve fuel. I drive my vehicle less than 3,000 miles per year, and can go weeks without driving it at all. We purchase Energy Star Appliances. We hang many clothes to dry. We've only used our air conditioner (set at 80) for 6 days this summer (and we've had 46 days over 100 here.) We've cut our residential power usage by as much as 80% a month.

Cut everyday waste. We recycle and we Freecycle. There is even a thread over in Home and Garden on RECYCLING that has some great ideas for people.

Do your research. I do check labels and I do read the news -- so that I can be better informed and can make more prayerful decisions.

Participate in activism. I do, and I vote.

I can pretty well ditto Harvie on this one.
I don't drink coffee, am diabetic, try to eat oragnically, etc.

But not because of the apparent New Age philosophy I
detect in that article.

Jesus was not one bit concerned about the politics of His day.
I have to keep reminding myself of that, but I am active in keeping
abreast of what our political parties and key demons are doing.
And I vote accordingly. And I vote according to the moral stances
of the candidates, not how much money they can put in my pockets.

I'd rather starve than help those who completely oppose God to
get into office.

I believe Luke Chapter 6 is an example of how Christians can live justly. Righteous living (Luke 6:31) and unconditional love (Luke 6:35) and equal justice (Luke 6:38).

well, a few beasts come to mind ...

  • red herrings
  • the elephant in the living room

But, that's neither here nor there, so let's return to the original question

A recent change we've made in our family is -- "adopting" Muslim grad students, helping them with English, and working to learn their language. It's been a real blessing over the last few years, all the way around.

But come on, folks! Should you all run out and do likewise? How many socially awkward hobbyist linguists are out there? The God who makes every snowflake unique has a unique calling / opportunity / blessing for every family! A positive way to serve His purposes, for His glory. Something MUCH more fun than figuring out how many routine substances one can eschew!
