Anyone else getting anxious for Stargate Universe to air?
I'm fearful that it won't be as good as the original. Atlantis was a step down from SG1, but I did still enjoy it, just not as much. But, still yet, I am excited. Me and hubby started watching Stargate when we were dating so its become "our" show.

We shall see soon enough. A lot depends on the quality of the casting -- that's what made the other Stargate shows so successful. You can always fire the scriptwriters, but once a show's cast is set. it's tough to make major changes to it.

From what I can gather, this is not at all like the other Stargates...the filming is more like Battlestar Galactica and there are several cast members from there on Stargate Universe. I am still looking forward to seeing it.

I did not like BG, so I am holding out hope that SGU will not go down that cheesy route...imo

BG wasn't my absolute favorite ever, but I enjoyed it. What did you find "cheesy" about it?

I watched SG very early on for a season or two, but haven't seen anything since MacGyver left the show. Haven't seen even one episode of Atlantis.

I will check this one out for a few episodes to see if I like it.

Yeah, BG was anything but cheesy -- the main criticism of that show was that it was *too* far away from undoubted cheesiness of the original. If SU is even half as good as BG then it will be a good show. Early reviews are very promising.

The overt sexuality was quite annoying to me and my husband...we just wanna see sci-fi stuff blow up and all that and instead, we get robot sex.

I know the show won over a lot of people cause it was "dark" and politcal and all that...I didn't like it...at all

Stargate - all of them - have a very definite feel to them, even in the filming. Previews for this Stargate are not even close.

We'll watch, too for a while...hoping we're wrong.

I watched it last night. It was decent. I really liked it that they had General O'Neil, Daniel and Carter. It didn't really seem like Stargate though. Hopefully it'll get better though.

Gotcha. Not my favorite low-lights of the series either. Now that I think about it, the "darkness" and sexuality were probably part of the reason I haven't watched it since season 2.5....

I'm with you: I love pure sci-fi action, sci-fi explosions, and sci-fi humor.

I thought it was so-so. I didnt HATE it, it was different feeling, but I think I'll like it ok.

The sex scene and what appears to be future sex scenes look annoying and I could do without, I hope they dont over sex it. I'm not a prude by any means, but the scene they had in there was 100% unnecessary, and from the previews doesnt look like it will be the last.

Finally watched it. Not bad. Not phenomenal, but not bad. I really like how the military put the puzzle in a video game for nerds to solve

Anyhow, did anyone else find it to be just a rehash of Star Trek: Voyager with some superfluous differences? The characters get stuck on a spaceship in previously unknown parts of the universe with no way to return home. They have to visit new planets and meet unknown aliens.

Its just Voyager transplanted into the Stargate universe (har har).

It's too early to tell if it's a just rehash of Voyager. I would hope that the creators would realize the obvious comparison and steer themselves away from it. We shall see.

I wasn't blown away by it either, but I will continue watching. I suspect it will end up being more like the other Stargate shows that they set out to be, simply because it's apparent from the first two episodes that's really all they know how to do. It might remain darker, but it's not going to end up being another BSG, not even close.

I agree completely.

Also, I really do like most of the cast. Robert Carlyle is a cool cat in my book, and I hope Lou Diamond Phillips makes regular appearances. I always liked him. The videogame-nerd-genius character of Eli Wallace, played by David Blue, I like.. for now. He reminds me of Topher (Fran Kranz) from Dollhouse, minus the God-complex.

Here is a question for everyone: when the Senator sacrificed himself to manually close the shuttle door to seal the air leak from the main ship, did it occur to anyone else that they could have just used some pipes or something to make an arm that could punch the "enter" button on the shuttle's control panel? I mean, the seat and panel were maybe 20ft from the air lock, in a straight line. It would have been easy to make something that could reach the control panel. All they had to do was position something heavy over the "enter" button, then have someone enter the "seal door" command, run for the door and drop the heavy object.

I guess they never watched MacGyver or Mythbusters.

I long ago decided it's pointless to examine plot devices like this too closely, and there are always ways to come up with explanations -- like the fact that Ancient technology requires you to have the ancient gene to operate it--not that it came up on this show, but perhaps the controls require a human presence to be operated (just no always one with the gene!). I guess you could have cut off someone's finger and stuck it on the end of the pole...

My biggest complaint about that plot was that it was boringly predictable -- nothing that hasn't been done 1000 times before, even on Stargate. When you want to make a splash at the start of the series, you would thing that they would have tried something more original. BSG's "33" at the start of the regular series is a fine example of what you can do if you put your mind to it. I don't expect the SGU team to live up to such lofty goals but hopefully they aspire to better things in future episodes.

We're still watching...for now.

I don't like that there are "loose ends" in each episode so far. It's just one long, drawn out MTV video/storyline in many scenes - more melodramatic than story telling imo. An episode will not stand alone as it seems there will be a cliff hanger of some kind. And I want to find a character(s) that I can really like.

The cliff-hanger is just an annoyance because I'm not a #1 fan yet.

You guys should let the network know that they are paralleling ST: Voyager and it's obvious. Execs don't think the audience notices so it may be worth while.

and another thing...

Why is it that the only one who "prayed" during their video time is the one guy who was fornicating in the first episode? Not that anyone who prays must be perfect or anything, but come on...the subleties are sometimes insulting.

I'm liking it enough to keep watching. Its not my favorite Stargate ever. I think the acting is a little weak at times. Hoping it gets better once it gets going good, there still seems to be alot of "setting up" going on.

The sex scene in the first episode still bugs me, I'm totally not a prude but it was pretty explicit, IMO, and it served no real purpose at all.

so now that there have been a couple more episodes, is everyone still watching?

I've reached a point where we watch it, but it's not something I'm really drawn into now.

I finally remembered where I've seen the actor who plays Bush before...he played opposite Samuel Jackson in the movie, Formula 51, which was very funny.

Still watching. Not for the story, entirely, though it is growing on me, but rather because I like the actors and their characters.

Robert Carlysle is awesome. And, I loves me some Lou Diamond Phillips, too, even if his character is SUCH a jerk!

The movie with James Spader and Kurt Russell came back on TV the other night. I don't see anything else as good as the original movie.

I am so, so, SO very tired of the sex scenes.

I've been buying Stargate seasons on DVD, because I want to enjoy them someday with my kids (like, when they're 8-10 arena?) and there's NO WAY I'm going to do that with a sex scene EVERY SINGLE EPISODE. (And yeah, I know that the first season had a nekkid person that I never saw because I saw it on network TV. I do intend to pre-screen episodes before showing them to the kids. But STILL.)

Not to mention that thus far, they're honestly a wee bit boring.

I'm about ready to stop watching. Which, in my Stargate-loving household, is saying a lot.
