Publix and Bi-Lo will let you do that here. And their BOGO sales are literally 50% off cause you don't have to buy both items to get the deal. Food Lion does not do that - you have to get both.

FYI: Food Lion just recently bought Bi-Lo

bummer...wonder if/when those policies will change...doesn't matter, if my local Bi-Lo changes to Food Lion - I'll just shop at Publix.

We spend a lot on groceries I guess. There are four in our family, and our grocery budget includes all household items like toiletries, etc. On average, we spend 600. We don't eat out a lot, we homeschool and are home all the time, and good food is a pleasure given to us by God.

I shop with a list and I use a saver card. I cook from scratch, and we often have people over for dinner which keeps our costs up.

If we ever had to cut back, we could, but thankfully for now we don't have to.

This week is great at Walgreen's for stocking up on cold medicine, Zantac, Sure deodorant, and Vaseline lotion.

Let me know if you all want more details and I'm sure myself or writerchick can explain the Walgreen's couponing process.

I've really got to get back on my ads. I was thrilled to see that I could get Sure for $.50 each. Now I just have to work in a trip to Wags before I head off to Florida on Wednesday. They also have GenTeal on sale and a Q came out yesterday. According to my swim coach, that's much better for your eyes than Visine. Since we practiced without goggles yesterday, I could barely see to drive home. I'm thinking I want to give GenTeal a try.

To my understanding they will be closing the Bi-Lo Stores that are near Food Lion Stores.

I know they opened a Harris Teeters but I haven't been there yet.

No Piggly Wiggly for us... I think they are mostly in the south?

We have Albertson's, King Sooper(Kroger), and Safeway.

Safeway? There's a Thriftway in my hometown (FL)
We used to have a Kroger years ago, but they packed up and left town.
I've done work for Albertson's (market research).

And I always thought Piggly Wiggly was just in the south, but apparently they've made a northern move in some states.

I just like saying the name cause it's truly redneck-eaze.

We don't have any of those. We have Winn-Dixie, Publix, and of course Wal-Mart.

We used to have a Piggly Wiggly in this area, but that was years ago.

Our main stores are Kroger and Walmart. There's also a Harvest Foods and a Cranfords, but they are both fairly small chains.

Our main grocery store is SaveMart, a regional chain. And I do a lot of shopping at Whole Foods and Trader Joes and a local market called, amazingly enough, The Market. Our local WalMart isn't a Super WalMart and doesn't have much in the way of groceries, really.

We have Aldis, Giant Eagle, Save-A-Lot, Shur-Save, and Walmart. There are some local independent stores too. In Pittsburgh there's a Whole Foods and Trader Joes, and a great little food-coop.

Lol. Around here, there's a place called Pechin's. It's like a mall for the mountain-people. Appalachia in living color. And you can get a spaghetti dinner for $1.50. Love it. Wish we lived closer. Although the article I linked says they're moving to a new location, I love the description of being able to see the stream ("crick", around here) through the floorboards in the original building.

Oh, we have a couple smaller farmer's market type of places. The one I shop at *all* the time(every Wednesday) is The Sunflower Market. They have incredible produce prices. For example, whole pineapples are only $1 this week

Wow, that is incredible Ryanne. The cheapest I can find them is $2.50.

Recently, I have been shopping at Giant Eagle because they have good sales that I can combine with double coupons. Bonus! I got 20oz Progresso chicken broth for $1 today.

I shop at our local IGA for meat because they have good deals on meat. There is Aldi's and Save a Lot around here, but I don't go there much. The quality of the food isn't to my liking.

That is a great deal! Every once in a while our Smart n' Final has fresh whole pineapples for $1.50 -- also a great deal!

Pineapples for $1??? That's crazy! They are somewhere around $4 or $5 here right now - if you can even find them.

Everything there is cheap, I don't really worry much about it being organic so it works nicely for us. During the summer berries were about $.89 a container, even the more expensive ones like blueberries and blackberries. It works fabulously for us since we eat more fresh produce and meat then anything else.

Our budget also includes all household items...cleaners, toiletries, etc. We homeschool and we enjoy our food (and I make a mean traditional lasagne!)

If we ever had to cut back, we could, but thankfully for now we don't have to.

I have found that having guests over does not really increase our costs that much....I just incorporate it into my menu planning and will choose a meal such as lasagne, or King Ranch casserole , or a nice roast.....

I think the big thing is if one makes a menu, not merely a list.....it changes what goes on the list a little bit, and helps one to keep everything balanced. We try to limit our red meat intake...not merely for cost, but for health reasons, and we aren't afraid of vegetarian meals (Black bean enchilada bake is excellent...kind of like a mexican lasagne! and it feeds 14 people with one recipe that cost about $5.00 to make!).....

We use fresh or canned fruit for desserts...occasionally I will make something else....

We use fresh veggies for snacks or cheese cubes....

I know that I could cut back our budget of $ 500 to 600 for 7 people....there are "luxury items" that I buy that we could live without....

WOF, do you use coupons? plan your meals around sales? How do you keep your costs so low?

WOF, do you use coupons? plan your meals around sales? How do you keep your costs so low?

I use coupons...sort of. I am not religious about it.

I make menus for all three meals a day for 2 weeks....that way I can take one night's dinner and use it for lunches the next day, or for another dinner later in the week. I will buy meat when it is on sale, and I base my meals around what is in my pantry, etc. So for example...if I have macaroni noodles in my cupboard and hamburger in my freezer...I will put chili mac on the menu because all I need to buy is some cheddar cheese for that meal...which provides supper, as well as the next day's lunch. I don't plan around sales so much as I take advantage of sales when they happen...and keep my pantry stocked with basics such as flour, rice, spices, noodles, veggies, etc. It may mean that one grocery day is more than half of my monthly budget, BUT usually it pays off in that the next grocery day will be less than half......

I have had a couple months where taking advantage of sales meant I spent closer to 700 for that month...but then the next month...I only spend about 300....so it comes out even.

I don't buy paper towels or napkins.....I use cloth napkins (some of which I have made myself), and we use cleaning rags (old t-shirts, etc) instead of paper towels....that cuts out a HUGE portion of the average bill. I don't buy junk food....we seldom have chips. I make most puddings from scratch, my own hot chocolate mix, etc. We have soda less than once a month. I do buy unsweetened koolaid to have on occasion..but my kids mostly drink water between meals, with one glass of OJ for breakfast, and milk for the other two meals ( I make sure they get the amount needed for their age group). We eat a lot of vegetables...both fresh, frozen and canned...and that keeps costs down.

During the winter...I bake my own bread.....in the summer...I do not...since cooling the house off after baking costs as much (if not more) than buying bread at that time of year.

I also buy shampoos, etc in bulk when available..and again..I keep a supply drawer so that I am able to buy when they are on sale rather than when we run out......So we usually have 2 shampoos, 2 toothpastes, etc put there so that when we get down to one...I look for sales....and usually....our preferred brand will be on sale, and even better if I have a coupon for it!

The pantry method really works well...because you can keep those basics stocked up during sales..and can build your meals off of that.....rather than merely what is on sale that week.

Thanks for the tips. I do some of those things and have recently figured out it is a good idea to stock up when items are on sale. In the past, I buy the best priced items when we are close to running out.

I recently got into bread baking --- and love it. How do you store your bread so it doesn't get hard? The first time I made it my bread was a rock after 2 days.
