quote:
ORIGINAL: doinkdom Leviticus is about God establishing community, guidelines for OT believers to live in community. Yes but moral laws and principles are in rigor today and your neighbor is not just your Xian bro so that text still applies. quote:
2 Timothy is an exhortation to Timothy in contrast to false teachers. Having focused almost exclusively on the false teachers in 3:1–9, Paul addresses Timothy directly on how he must resist the opponents and remain faithful to the gospel. So it isn't for us today? I hope that's not your meaning. Or, resisting atheist idiocy and hatred with strong words and teaching isn't part of the whole? It certainly is, otherwise we merely continue with the standard current status quo - preach to the choir and rebuke the other denomination! quote:
Nobody said lie down and take it...but really...what is there to take? Isn't our job to preach the good news of the Gospel to everyone? How does that compare to what you're suggesting? What am I suggesting exactly? quote:
I'm not saying you're completely wrong...in fact righteous anger should provoke action. I'm just not convinced moral activism is that action and I haven't seen suggestions for anything else. That's exactly why I'm asking for more valid Xian ideas! And I'm not even talking about "righteous anger" per say. I'm talking about how Xians can respond to such open affronts to us that would never be tolerated - as per the OP - if the same were done to Jews or Muslims or even gays! Would Jews put up with seeing some jerk driving around their community with a "so many Jews, so few death camps" sticker on his car!?! Highly improbable to say the least! There would be a public outrage. Yet we Xians just sit there doing nothing - and indeed - looking as though we really don't care. Worse, looking like fools who will tolerate whatever anyone wants to publish against them without a grain of resistance. That's what I would call sinful tolerance. That isn't "turning the other cheek", that's putting ones mind on hold and thus condemning the next generation of believers to live under the tyranny of intolerant antichrists! The founders of America certainly would never have allowed such open hate speech to be driving around showing anti-christ hate messages. Clearly what the nominal church is doing isn't doing much good at curbing the incredibly bad and just plain false ideas being spread around about Christians and Christianity.

ORIGINAL: GHitch The world is acting as it shouldn't actually but I get your point as per, "if they hated me they will also hate you" etc.. Well, yes their actions are wrong, but they are in fact acting according to their nature... quote:
I'm certainly not asking for a call to arms. I'm am saying that Xians should start seriously thinking of a far better means of informing the public on the facts than the useless "wait until they come to church or watch our TV show" attitude (they won't, for the most part). Worse, the waiting for them to 'come and get you' wannabe martyr attitude. The world is never going to be our friend... And it's not some wannabe martyr attitude, it's simply accepting that fact... quote:
If we don't educate the public, the enemy will - and already has. By all means... Preach the Gospel... Just be prepared that not everyone is going to hear the wisdom of God...

Status quo is the name of the game huh? You're also wrong about the "martyr trip" so many Xians are on these days. It's nothing but self pity and vain glorious thinking. Its the same old "lets sit around slapping ourselves on the back, waiting for martyrdom (or the rapture bus) to come and take us from this mean world" - and then wrongly believing that there's some "glory" in that. That's all I hear you saying. Modern Xians, rightly so-called, seem to be mostly spineless wimps that, while looking down self-righteously upon the heathen in feigned "love", understand so little of the true spirit of Christ it's enough to make heaven shed tears. quote:

If we don't educate the public, the enemy will - and already has. Education is not the answer. That's what our country thought would make people good. . . and look what we have. Humanistic teaching or teaching on being good is not the answer. One must be born again, born of the Spirit, become a new creature. Then and only then does one have the chance of thinking differently, seeing differently. Spiritual men are not educated men. They are men indwelt and led by the Holy Spirit. It can't be taught even in a seminary or Sunday school class. Yes, GHitch, we need to tell people about Jesus. But it is a spiritual work we are doing and God's work is done God's way. . . not by might nor by power but by My Spirit. I'm certainly not saying I know God's way but He's teaching me and I want to learn. And I've certainly experienced the failure of doing in 'my' way. So we must be patient, pray, cry out to the Lord for His leading in these situations and not respond in the flesh.

You have to remember that American pews are filled with CINOs, cultural Christians, and other make-believers. One of the huge obstacles in evangelizing in America today is that most people already think they are Christians!, even though it is quite obvious they aren't. Good thread, GHitch. You are absolutely 100% correct that Xian does not = doormat. We are supposed to engage the enemy, not let the enemy trample on us and pretend it feels good. If we live long enough we may see a reversal in "GHitch`s" title. It may read "So many lions, So few Christians". I think the commend "all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing" is so true and worth re-posting. So what can we do? -Pray for your enemies. Do we still believe in the power of prayer? -Become politically involved in the politics, law inforcement and community affairs of your country wherever possible. At least do your part and get out and vote for the good guys. At least we can all do that. Be a light in your dark corner. -Speak-up! I know the O.P. loves this one. However I`ll say speak only and act only if motivated by love. Never allow the same hate that drives them to ever drive you. -And, I hate to post it, but we`re living in an evil world and the Bible says we will suffer persecution. So don`t be to surprised if your words and actions may fall on deaf ears. -Finally, do what Jesus would do according to Matt.5:44. "But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you."

Ghitch, "...but what is your real life reaction": this is an absurd statement for a supposed xtian to make. Why care about that. That has nothing to do with your salvation...unless you follow that "real life reaction." That would be very bad news for you. I laughed. The bumpersticker was funny, not threatening to me. I heard this same thing thirty years ago. Lighten up. Presently, xtianity in general is not persecuting others. Some groups of xtians are, but that will happen. Why should the fact of persecution bother you to the point of murderous rage that you, and a few others, are expressing. Elena gave you the answer. Her answer, for the xtian, is a "real life" solution; what you, and a few others, seem to be advocating is a worldly solution. Know where your total trust should be: it is not in worldly weapons. "Take no thought for your life." What is death to a young xtian? Early enrollment in eternity. How terrible is that?

Why would wanting to know how to react to something as a Christian be an "absurd statement"?!? The funny thing is that you actually answered his question while trying to scoff it off. Your answer is, "my real life reaction is to do nothing and mock people who do differently". For those of us who are actually interested in being salt and light (preservation and illumination) and actually interacting with the world as we are supposed to, GHitch's question is quite valid: how do you react to a growing desire to physically harm Christians? An answer of "nothing" flies in the face of Scripture that instructs us to confront error, to present truth when lies are present, to "destroy arguments". Quite frankly this attitude of, "Oh, lets just sit around and let unbelievers do whatever they want and hope we get martyred" is ridiculous. The Bible says to expect persecution and not to worry when it happens to you. It does not say "go out seeking to be persecuted" or "create situations that so you can be persecuted". That is a perversion of the Word.

Hi all - I have to say as the poster above did that this thread is not what I expected at all. first off, I am not a cat person, so fewer felines is ok by me lol. I would like to toss my humble .02 in. quote:
Act 22:25 And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned? Act 22:26 When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman. Act 22:27 Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea. Paul did not hesitate to call on his rights as a citizen of Rome. We also have rights we can hold up and claim while we are here. In fact, I would go so far as to say the US at least, is rapidly deteriorating because too few stood up to claim their rights. If I am harassed about my faith in and love for Jesus, I will fight back, within the system of course. That said, I also see Jesus' entire ministry as being much more confrontational than some I've heard. He confronted (as was also mentioned already) sin and error relentlessly. I won't seek out persecution. I believe that would be foolish and counter productive. But I will speak up on occasion if it's thrust into my face. Regarding the "On occasion" above - I have pretty thick skin Thank God, and some things just are not worth getting rattled over. ok, off my soap box now LoL. Peace all

The world is the world and acts accordingly. It would surprise me if the world supported anything christian. What we do is love them. Be kind to your enemies and it will be like heaping burning coals on their heads.....that...is our action.

My apologies. And manimal, good to see you back in stride again. I said it was an absurd question because of my history with that "bumper sticker." It has also been phrased "Christians 0, Lions 10." I think Christianity Today carried that joke. I have heard some variation on that joke for over thirty years, spoken by people of faith as well. The world has been doing this, I feel certain, for a few thousand years. The idea someone wants to stop this reaction of the world was amusing to me. And Christianity has not been exactly innocent in its history and to this present day. There is good cause for people to mock the religion. This religion has done more than its fair share of persecutions, oppression, and wars. One can take, "So many Christians, so few lions" as a personal threat or a playful mockery that is not undeserved. When someone like me comes around one of the better verses to hold up is Luke11:21. But remember, this refers to the spiritual realm, which I detected a few were overlooking in search of "real world" solutions. When Christ says, "fully armed" do you think pistols, rifles, and missiles? Did He mean bring a gun to church and start profiling your neighbors? Why are the persecuted happy? (No one answered so I thought I'd ask again.) Because their souls are in the right position with Christ. Seek first the kingdom of heaven and you will have all the proper answers you need to any threat and all the strength you need to carry them out. It is His rod and His staff that protects you. There is no need for worry or concern, which is what I was reading. Such concern and worry is sin. If you take no thought for your life, God will fill that void; the full armor of God will be yours--and, as a Christian, that is all you need. My "murderous rage" phrase was perhaps overdone. But that is what I detected; a touch of hysteria and desperation, such as when anyone who might not agree to the "seriousness" was condemned and calling atheists "retards" also demonstarted to me a thoroughly un-christian approach. It seemed alarmist. It did not seem a call to continue in doing God's work, spreading and standing courageously in The Word, but to start preparing an enemy list for war, which is playing into The Enemy's hands. How big is your Samaritan List? Are "atheist retards" at the top? Muslims, perhaps? Liberals? Catholics? "Peaceniks" like myself? "Love your neighbor as yourself." "Do not return eveil for evil." "Turn the other cheek." "Go the extra mile." This is Scripture that tells you HOW NOT "to put up with this homicidal hate propaganda": you stand in the love, peace, and mercy of the Lord. This, at least for Christians, is a "real life" answer to this soninme gave you the solution.

quote:
Nothing in scripture tells us we have to put up with such homicidal hate propaganda. Nothing in scripture tells us we have to lie down and let murderous sentiment invade our nation or neighborhood. Do you know the life of Jesus as told in scripture? Do you know the life of Paul as told in scripture? Are we reading the same word? In the scriptures I read, Jesus says things like, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting, that I might not be delivered up to the Jews; but as it is My kingdom is not of this realm." John 18:36 Homicidal hate propaganda/murderous sentiments abounded in the days of Christ. He went quietly to His death. Here are the Apostle Peter's words about Jesus and how we are to live. For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, who committed no sin, nor was any deceit in His mouth; and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously. . . I Peter 2:21-23 Jesus and His Apostles' lived out the life we are called to. They gave us an example so that we could see what the Spirit life looks like, up close and personal. We have His word to read and His Spirit living in us to live it out of us. Do we see Jesus taking the kind of action you are speaking of? Or Paul? or Peter? No. We see men willing to die, not fight. When Nero threatened to force a martyr to deny Christ, the martyr asked, "By what power?" Nero's response was "I have power to kill you!" The martyr replied, "You, O Caesar, have the power to kill me; but I have the power to die."' We have the power to die only when death has been conquered within our own heart because of Jesus. Death is not the enemy, not a loss, but only ushers us into greater glory. It is this response Christ desires for us. It is my desire as well.

Very nice, liveloved, my sentiments exactly, although you expressed them far better. We are told the world would hate us. Some will hate us with justifiable reasons, unfortunately, and some will hate us as they hated Christ. For that we are to be thankful and, yes, rejoice. It is as if this thread is asking us as Christians to act differently because of a bumpersticker. What I hear is, "After two thousand years enough is enough. We must band together and stop the world from acting worldly. That's our rights as Americans. It is time to take off the kid gloves, get realistic, and stop this lovey-dovey nonsense." Love is the end of the world...in us. Love, by scriptural definition, takes ALL of our heart, mind, soul, and strength. Love takes all of who we are; there is no "I" left to fret over survival or what it will drink or eat. Truth has set us free, not America. Our "rights" as Christians is to love and serve him, and to love and serve others. God has given us the privilege and opportunity to represent Him on earth. This is our only "concern."

Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Philippians 2:5-8 This is the attitude of one who loves Him.

Dear GHitch... I want to point out one thing. (first.) You are looking at the mote while you have a plank. You are soooooooooo angry and coming off like that that you would never be able to show that (offensive) person how or why what theyre doing is opposite (in your opinion) to the gospel. I on the othe hand would have thought, hmmm... maybe they mean WE Christians DO need to be more BOLD. At least I try to be. :) and or if I really did think they were trying to jab emotionally at Christians, I would think, u know what, JEsus IS the Lion of Judah... they don't even know what they're talking about. AND the other thing I want to say is did u pray for that person? what do u really want for him/her? to know the love of the Lord? Sorry you got offended... pray about it. Godbless you....
