you have to see the CHRISSA movie to understand her background. Her mother lost her job and they were kicked out of their apartment for a time and lived in a homeless shelter but before the movie is over her mother gets a new job and they get an apartment. It's not like they are glorifying homelessness it's the fact that this is a reality to people who never would have dreamed they would ever be in this situation. American Girl is doing an excellent job of offering stories and dolls that are telling chidren how some families are not as fortunate as others. Also in the stories of CHRISSA , chrissa and her friends do work with the homeless shelter that GWEN was in and showed GWEN that they cared about her and her situation. Although the dolls are pricey, and yes, my girl does have one (which I didn't buy) , their books and movies are affordabe and can be found in most libraries. They are very good at showing how children are different yet still children no matter where they are from or what background they have.

I see a difference between a doll-about-a-story where the story includes a period of homelessness... and just a 'Homeless Jo-Jo" doll as a gimmick. I understand that most of the "American Girl" stuff is semi-historical? I recall seeing a half a sappy movie or something, but a rich girl, I think, was sneaking food to poor girl who was hiding on her property? So, wouldn't that mean that they've already done a 'homeless' girl? Seriously, seen the right way, "Anne of Green Gables" -- the personification of quintessential Canadian wholesomeness, could easily have been described as having come through homelessness. And there are lots of dolls of her.

While I agree I just think it's a little ironic that this "homeless" doll is $ 95.00 and as dd le me know yesterday that none of the proceeds go towards homelessness! Wouldn't that have been a good thing? Dd has owned American Girl stuff since the beginning and I've alwasy like the stories because of the historical backgroun, but this seems odd to me.

I think they're all overpriced, but I'm not the one making money off of them nor do I have a little girl who wants one. It would be more effective to actually take a child to a shelter or soup kitchen, but at least the doll could get some people talking who might not otherwise.

Are they giving a percentage of the revenue to a homeless charity?

Neither of my girls have these dolls, That makes sense because I think their (the dolls) real heyday was before they (your girls) were born. I USED to love AG when it first came out. I collected the dolls/stuff for a while. But I came to realize that in each series of books, the character represented by that doll was rewarded for disobedience (except Addy, I think). When Addy came out, I kind of had the same thought as this poster. I told my mom, "Her stuff is sure expensive even though she is a newly freed slave." I don't have the stuff anymore. I gave 2 of the dolls to my two nieces (it was neat because each girl had similar or same name and coloring to the doll I gave them)...and I gave them each the paraphanalia that goes with their doll. Even though I had been disulusioned with them, I HAD bought them for the purpose of passing them on to daughters, and/or nieces, so that's what I did (plus there was self-benefit..it was all part of my decluttering project). The other 2, I sold. I have completely lost interest in them at this point. Other than if something catches my eye for my nieces (BTW, they are cousins to each other, they're not sisters). ________________________________________________ Ok, from what I just researched, I guess they are somewhat justified in this particular doll's proceeds not going to the homeless: quote:
While no proceeds from sales of Gwen have been directly earmarked for homeless aid, American Girl has cited its donations of "almost $500,000" in the last several years to national non-profit homeless housing group HomeAid through its Project Playhouse program.[25] from Wikipedia link here

I used to be a huge fan of AG, when they were privately owned by Pleasant Co. A few years back they were bought out by Matel (I think) and you can see a sharp change in the marketing of the products. The dolls are mass produced rather than hand done therefore are not really worth their high price tags. They crank them out at high rate and they do not do the historical research for the books that is why we are seeing more "modern" dolls/books vs the historical fiction of the past. Now the it is just about making money not about the historical facts behind the dolls they are selling. My oldest loved the stories.

Ironically, Pleasant T.Rowland started the series as an antiBarbie thing...I was sad when they sold to Mattell.

Nope, IMO not justified at all.

I was also disappointed to see that the pleasant company was bought by Mattel. But I have to say we have read all of the American girl books and loved all of them. I think the stories are excellent for girls and I would recommend them to anyone with daughter. I have to agree that the price is very high and I didn't purchase the doll that my girl has. A lady and her husband at church bought it for her. She has Kirsten. I do think the dolls and the accessories are very high quality. I would love it if they brought the price down but I doubt that is going to happen.

I don't have a problem with it. The American Girls' Stories have always tried to present some of the different struggles girls have gone through in our country. Why should they leave out homelessness?

Why would that make a difference? Should they only portray rich kids?

Well, since they don't do that ...... I just find it strange that's all. What's next, abused Mary or welfare Susie?

I can think of better ways to spend $95 to educate children about homelessness.
