ORIGINAL: Mrs.Wifey They are a business, they aren't obligated to donate money to any charity and yet they do. If they want to make a doll who is homeless then that is their business. I won't base where I buy something on how much money they donate(or don't donate) to charity. When I shop at The Children's Place or Baby Gap I don't ask how much money they donate to needy children, why should it be different because it's a toy company? But then, I think most boycotts are pretty stupid anyway. Mrs. Wifey I am not saying boycott to them and our choice has nothing to do with what they donate or to what charities. We quit buying AG when DD was convicted that their company's affiliation with WOW, Planned Parenthood and Girls Inc no longer agreed with her convictions. When they came out with the magazine and were pushing girl empowerment, etc. She asked for permission to look up Girls Inc. online and their mission statement blew her mind. (We looked together, BTW). This is a decision she made on her own with discernment after asking what several things on that website meant. Does her choice hurt AG, no it doesn't. The little bit of money that we have to spend at AG is not a drop in the bucket. Neither does my husbands conviction not to be a deacon in the church because he was married before change the fact that every year he is asked to be a deacon(he says no) but it is a conviction. God honors our convictions even when the world sees them as "pretty stupid".

I understand that, but that's a little different than the homeless doll issue, which is what this thread is about. If you don't like American Girl dolls for whatever reason, I have no problem with that. This particular thread was asking if selling a character doll from a story where a girl was temporarily with a home is wrong if you don't give the profit to help the homeless, and I don't think it is. I'm not defending American Girl on all fronts, just saying that this particular decision isn't wrong.

If they were giving adequate proceeds ofthis doll to real homeless kids I would probably go out of my way to try to support that, but their choice to not do that is definitely keeping me from buying their product.

by the way, Gwen is only going to be sold until December 31st . Then she will be no longer available. This doll has been out since January 1 st so I don't really understand why people are getting so upset about her now or did someone just find out after 10 months?

I really still don't understand the big deal. They did not create this doll to raise awareness for homelessness and than refuse to donate the profits. They did not even advertise the homelessness and pretend to use it as a charity. It is not to teach about homelessness. I could understand if they used that ploy to market it and then did not donate a large percent of the profits. Gwen's status as homeless is part of a story-line, nothing more. I don't see anybody getting all up in arms about the many, many, movies and books that make reference to a homeless person or community.

I was unaware of this doll until this thread was started...most people don't closely follow the AG doll set....they are simply too costly for most people. They may follow the book sets (we do it through our library), but not really the doll marketing.

I flew from CA to PA yesterday, and watched the Chrissa movie on the plane (even though the movie is sort of re do of mean girls but at a 4th grade level, it was still good---I even cried). By the end of the movie, Chrissa's friend (forget her name, but that's who the doll we're discussing is based on) IS NO LONGER HOMELESS!!!!!!! And the doll is really the character, not an epitome of homlessness. I thought if I shed that light on the issue, it might help.Throughout the course of the movie, Chrissa befriends the girl, stands up to bullies, and the homeless shelter that the friend and the friend's mom are in help the mom find a job and an apartment.

Thank you for your post, One of His, That is exactly what I have been saying all along. It's a really good movie. I even cried also. I thought it was very tastefully done for all ages especially 4th grade and up.
