It has been about a year since I went to the doctor. Is it a prescription or can I just get it at Walgreens?

Diflucan will work if it's a yeast infection, but if you've had a yeast infection for a year then you definitely need to be seen by a doctor.

Yep.. sometimes you have to take it twice. If you keep getting them you need to get the blood work done and get your blood sugar levels checked. Recurring yeast infections is a symptom of pre diabetes and diabetes.

You need to see a doctor. They need to run a culture. It may or may not be a yeast infection. Sometimes a bacterial infection can mimic a yeast infection and all the anti-fungal medications in the world will not clear it up. My MIL had this problem. They assumed it was merely another yeast infection...but when it just wouldn't go away....the nurse practitioner ran a culture..and voile...it was a strep infection. She was put on antibiotics geared specifically for that strain..and she has been much happier ever since. She has only had 2 yeast infections (real ones) since....and that has been 14 years ago.

pinkbecca What are you actual symptoms? I can't imagine being able to put up with a yeast infection for more than a couple of days, let alone a year (so I'd question if it is a fungal infection at all). When you saw your doctor, did he take a swab and have it tested? Are you careful only to wear cotton undies, not to wear tights (unless they have gusset ventilation), and not to use scented bath products? Do you use non-bio laundry products and fabric conditioner for sensitive skin?

I've had a yeast issue since March and while it has been bad periodically most of the time it's not. I am actually at the point where it needs to be cultured for a specific type of yeast because OTC meds and Diflucan do not work on ALL strains of yeast. I've done 4 rounds of Diflucan, the last one was every other day for 10 days and I'm still having some lingering issues.

I'm susceptible to getting them, and I find that the more I get, the less things work to get rid of them.

I wish I had an answer for natural remedies, but what I can say that helped my recurrent yeast infections were to no longer use soap "down there" -- just water, cotton underwear, try my best to keep it dry, yogurt (it puts the good back in your body). Diflucan usually works for me -- but when they were bad did have to do at least two doses. I would definitely suggest getting back to the doc because maybe it was misdiagnosed. If it was a bacterial infection, this sounds gross, but it will smell fishy (its the only way I know how to describe it, sorry people), and with that kind of infection you can't treat it like a yeast infection. There is a separate kind of cream for that. I've had (I think) two of those in my life, and I was miserable! Yeast infections are bad enough. I hope it gets better soon.
