Do you want to see a movie that is kinda hokey but has good special effects? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZxBYItj2sM

Well, the stuff about the Mayan predictions being accurate is nonsense, especially since almost nothing of the Mayan's writings survived the Spanish conquest, so we don't even have any. The stuff you get on the web about it is just a bunch of authors spinning fabulous stories out of the odd fragment of information that did survive. I suspect 2012 will be a bad movie, but if you like large scale special effects and lots of explosions and destruction then you might enjoy it.

I MAY watch it on DVD. I don't know if I can stand yet another "end of the world" story that doesn't include God and the REAL end of days.

Honestly, if you are going to make a movie about the future, it needs to be more than 3 years out, IMO. If I happen to go see it, I hope to make a big ruckus. "You call THIS the future?! Where are the flying cars? The personal teleportation devices? Look at this . . . they still have WEATHER!"

The movie is set in 2012 because according to the Mayan calendar that is when the world ends. Their calendar involves several blocks of time that repeat a certain number of times and the last cycle ends in 3 years. I used to know more of the specifics but I did the research a few years ago and just can't remember right now. Kris

I understand *why* it was set in 2012. I am saying they should have made it years ago. Or, you know . . . not at all.

Actually, in marketing terms, they are releasing the movie at just about the perfect time. They are cashing in on all the idiots (and I use the word advisedly) who are hyping up 2012 as the year the end-of-the-world is going to happen. In fact, they may be going a little too far and scaring the gullible people who are prone to believe this type of nonsense. Hopefully nobody will do anything too stupid because of it.

Do you think it will be like Y2K all over again?

ORIGINAL: rawr.ben Do you think it will be like Y2K all over again? Well, in terms of it being pretty much a non-event, yes (only more so). In terms of hype and hysteria beforehand -- probably not. Y2K was actually a real problem, and there were many thousands of person years worth of work put in to ensure that computer systems didn't fall over because of the issue. In the end, we were well prepared and just about everything went off without a hitch. Where I worked -- a blue chip computer company -- the only things that broke down were the vending machines! There is noting to prepare for with 2012 since it's all just in the mind of a few rather deluded people, so serious minded people don't need to pay it a moment's thought, unlike Y2K where just about anyone in employment had to at least consider if anything they were using or doing might be impacted by a computer glitch.

I'm going to watch it. I like disaster movies. This movie is coming out in Nov. I am sure people were joking but the DVD will be out by 2010.

Sorry, rawr.ben, I mentioned that because I've heard a lot of people say the same thing who didn't know why. It is actually a very interesting system to study but just like Nostradamus and other "prophets" it is very easy to find something to fit when you look at it hundreds of years later. I'll probably watch it on DVD when it comes out (2013 or not!) because I like disaster/end of the world movies too. Kris
