My husband thinks that I might be adding a lot of unnecessary work to my day by having my kids correct every single problem before filing it away. He thinks that if it is obvious that they understand the concepts that I should just go ahead and file it away... uncorrected. He says that with five kids that it is adding up to a lot of unneeded stress. It makes sense. The perfectionist in me is having a hard time with it though. What do you all do with corrections?

I only make them do corrections if there are a lot of them, especially in a set of like problems. If they get all of a kind wrong, then obviously they haven't grasped the concept. Then we sit down and work through that particular kind of problem together, to make sure they understand it. If they get a whole lot wrong all over the paper, and I know they know the concept, I assume they are being sloppy in the work and I make them do it over as a lesson to not be careless. But if it's just a few here and there that they just didn't get quite right for one reason or another, I'll explain where they went wrong and tell them to be more careful next time, but I don't make them correct it. I just say, "Only two wrong this time--not bad!" and then they put it up. If they get it all right I draw elaborate smileys on their page. They love working for a smiley, even the older ones.

I only make him fix all of the errors when it is obvious to me that he was hurrying and being careless. If it's because he didn't understand the concept, we will go through all the incorrect ones together. If it's just a few here and there, I let them go. I do mention things to him if I see a recurring problem, so he knows for next time. I agree with Russ.

I do grade all work. For math problems, I check to see WHY it's wrong. If it's 2+2=5, well, that's just a stupid mistake (assuming "higher" math). If they have missed a good number of problems, we go over the concept again, then they will do more the next day. I do not make them correct all missed problems.

I have my girl to correct her papers before they are filed because I think if she missed a problem then she needs to find out why she missed it then instead of thinking that she got the problem correct. If she missed it because she was in a hurry then she needs to slow down and take her time. I only have the one so it only takes a matter of seconds to get this done.

I do point out WHY the problem was wrong. ie forgot to carry/borrow, mis-added/subtracted, columns not lined up, etc. If it's just an occasional error, I let it go. EVERYONE makes math errors on occasion. Even dh, who is an engineer. He was running a test that cost several thousands of dollars. He did the math on the black board, then set up and ran the test. Huh... everything was half an inch off. How did that happen?! Then one of the techs looked at the black board. There it was--- 2.5+2.5=5.5 Uh huh...

I make them correct every problem. I have 5 kids too. It isn't about me being a perfectionist (although I can be)...it is about them understanding why..... There are exceptions to the rule sometimes....I don't make them correct problems on tests, unless I think the reason they missed it was because of not understanding...and then we work through it together. If I show it to them (the incorrect problem) and they say "oh man...I know what I did..." and can verbally tell me...then I leave it as well. When it is something other than math....they have to find the correct answer and write either it in, or the source where they found the answer. The reason I have them do this is two fold. It helps them remember the correct fact, and...sometimes I am wrong or the answer key is wrong...and this gives us the proof and correction we all need.

I have had Noah do all his corrections the past two days. He has had a bad attitude and gotten sloppy with his work. When I do corrections, I will often do them verbally as I'm correcting the work. When he gets it right verbally, I know that he just made a mistake.

I don't correct every subject because some subjects I really don't mind if they are just reading through the book...like History & Science. I have them do the questions and will glance at their answers now and then. I correct Vocab the day before they take a test, that way they can correct their errors and study. I correct Math several times a week. They are to fix their answers, check the ones that needed fixed and if they are still wrong then they watch the solutions disk because I can't keep up with 5 kids. I correct Easy Grammar about twice a week, if they have many wrong on one assigment, they are to re-do. If it is just a couple I let it go. If they get a lot wrong on a test, we re-do the test after more study. Otherwise, if they pass their test I don't make them correct anything. For DS and his reading...I tend to do things more orally because he lacks writing skills to answer some of the questions. He does well when it is fill in the blank, or the bubble for multiple choice.

In our curriculum, the kids have to score at least 80% before they can move on to the next section, so corrections are a necessary part of work for us. HOWEVER - that said, even if they make at least an 80% and I notice a trend in waht they are missing, we'll go over and correct them. It's more important to me that they grasp the concept rather than make a perfect score.
