A couple of weeks ago I was in Sunday school and we were discussing how families got along in the Bible. There seemed to be one thing in common with each family. They all had more than one child. So I was wondering if there are any examples in the Bible of there being a family with just one child.

John the Baptist was probably an only child.

Look at the NT. Families (children) are noticeably absent. Oh yes, Jesus says to let the children come to Him. But children are not the centerpiece of the church as they are in churches today. They, obviously, were a quiet part but not the focus. The focus of the church was the apostles teaching and fellowship, the breaking of bread and prayer. Where do the children fit in? Quietly attending to all. The number is irrelevant.

Samson may have been an only child.

Jephtha, to my knowledge is never recorded as having another child other than the one he sacrificed in response to his careless oath and it is recorded that at the time he had no other son or daughter

Samuel was an only child of his mother.

Isaac was the only child of Rebekah.

The thing is - men had more than one wife, and children were greatly desired. So even if a woman had only one child, there was probably more than one child in the household.

Actually Samuel's mother (we are talking about Hannah?) had three other sons and two daughters (I Samuel 2:21).

But yeah; as others said John the Baptist; probably Samson; Isaac for his mother.

Along the lines of Isaac; Ishmael was probably an only child for his mother also.
