Anything. He isn't as interested as I would like him to be.

reading with him seems to be the best solution -- he just wants to spend time with dad.

One of the most important things I've done for my kids is reading to them for an hour or so a night, whenever possible. Tonight, for example, I read Cease Firing, The Underground History of American Education, and Treasure Island to my 11 and 13 year olds.

(Great adventure. And great family values too.)

They are very quick reads of classic books, with pictures on every other page. They are PERFECT for the young readers. I'm telling you, buy these and your kids wont stop reading. Also, reward them every time they finish a book. Take them out for ice cream, buy them a small toy they've wanted, etc.

Two ideas. Let them see you reading. Let them know how much you (and others) value reading. This way it becomes a grownup activity that they want to do, because they want to be "big." Studies have shown that parents who are readers are more likely to have children who are readers. An example, my sister and her family were living with my parents temporarily while their new house was being finished. The family was gathered in the family room. My father was reading the newspaper. My mother was reading a book. My sister was helping her older child with his homework. My brother in law was reading paperwork for work. Suddenly their four year old burst out crying. What is wrong? She sobbed, "I'm the only one in the family who can't read!" And, she did grow up to be a big reader. Another idea I learned in a workshop... When your child is at a stage when you think s/he can stay up later, use staying up late as bait to read. Tell him or her that s/he should get ready for bed at the usual time, but now s/he may stay awake and read in bed for half an hour.

This has never been a problem in my house. Reading is just something that we do. All 4 of my kids as well as my husband and I are avid readers, reading a WIDE variety of authors and subject matter. I, however don't tell my kids what they can read and what they can't read - if it's something questionable, either their father or I will read it with them. We also, once they reach upper elementary, middle and high school, read any novels they are reading in school either before they read them or at the same time so we can discuss them intelligently with them. Now with 4 kids I can't read everything they read so I'm very grateful to have a husband that can and is willing read some of it as well! For me it is more like what I can do to encourage my kids to put down the book to actually eat their dinner without spilling the food all over the books!?! Blessings, Garsy
