Jesus said to obey him. So what exactly do we obey? Just the new testament? Some from the Old Testament? All of it?

I am very confused.

Good question.

Jesus said that if we love Him we will keep His Commandments;

(Joh 14:15) If ye love me, keep my commandments.

Jesus also said that if we call Him Lord;

(Luk 6:46) And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

And when ask a very simular question as the one you ask Jesus answered;

(Mat 22:36) Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

(Mat 22:37) Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

(Mat 22:38) This is the first and great commandment.

(Mat 22:39) And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

(Mat 22:40) On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

So if we love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, and mind; and love the Brethern as we love ourselves; we will be doing right.

Thanks
RC

A brethren is a fellow believer: brothers and sisters in Christ.

The word brethren is plural for "a believer in Christ." It's an old-fashioned word -- comes from before the 12th century (according to Merriam-Webster's Dictionary).

I guess perhaps the question is more accurately phrased: Whom are we truly obeying?
Yes?

I figure we have to get the whom right before we know if the what is right.

However, Jesus's use of the Two greatest Commands comes immediately before the Parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10. Since Samaritans and Jews were definitely not considered fellow "brothers and sisters", I strongly suspect that "loving our neighbors" is not restricted to only those who believe in Christ!

Pinkbow, can you find a NT passage in which Jesus commanded us to obey a specific OT teaching which would not be possible for us to obey today?

Obey what?

The Spirit ...the most excellent way....

1Cor 13:1.If I speak the languages of men and of angels, but do not have love, I am a sounding gong or a clanging cymbal.
2.If I have [the gift of] prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so that I can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.
3.And if I donate all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body to be burned, but do not have love, I gain nothing.
4.Love is patient; love is kind. Love does not envy; is not boastful; is not conceited;
5.does not act improperly; is not selfish; is not provoked; does not keep a record of wrongs;
6.finds no joy in unrighteousness, but rejoices in the truth;
7.bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
8.Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for languages, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end.
9.For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
10.But when the perfect comes, the partial will come to an end.
11.When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put aside childish things.
12.For now we see indistinctly, as in a mirror, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, as I am fully known.
13.Now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Gal5:
13.For you are called to freedom, brothers; only don't use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but serve one another through love.
14.For the entire law is fulfilled in one statement: Love your neighbor as yourself.
15.But if you bite and devour one another, watch out, or you will be consumed by one another.

{The Spirit versus the Flesh}
16.I say then, walk by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.
17.For the flesh desires what is against the Spirit, and the Spirit desires what is against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you don't do what you want.
18.But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19.Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity,
20.idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions,
21.envy, drunkenness, carousing, and anything similar, about which I tell you in advance-as I told you before-that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22.But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith,
23.gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.24.Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
25.If we live by the Spirit, we must also follow the Spirit.

Walking in the fruit of the Spirit fulfills the law

Hope this helps, Bob~

I am very confused.

A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. (John 13:34-35)

This is my commandment, that ye love one another, as I have loved. (John 15:12)

This is the new commandment of the new testament, that replaces the old laws of Moses of the old testament.

Replaces? Just seems like the wrong term to use, at least scripturally speaking. Jesus came to fulfill the law. Any law in the old testament was given to benefit the chosen people whether culturally, practically or relationally with God and people. This fact stands, whether we think the laws are relevant or required for today. "Replaces" just sends the wrong message--as I we could ignore the old laws. If nothing else we should recognize their contextual significance. It's healthy. A lot more than my pork ribs are.

Yea, replaces seems to be the operative word;

(Heb 8:13) In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

Thanks

Yup - ALL of it. It's spiritual food, that feeds the Holy Spirit in you.

As the Spirit grows, ALL things become clear. OT - history of nation of Israel, and NT - revelation of God in Christ, for all...

I think we must check ourselves the best we can to see if we are obeying God. I'm wondering right now if I must obey what my friend said about something, if its from God. Or if God has a different (hopefully better) plan for me.
