It's legal in most states. But is it proper to take things that others put out for the garbage man without asking? No big thing. Just wondering what everyone thought.

It's shameful what some people throw away, so dumpster diving is like righting a wrong.

So long as you don't get hurt or leave trash on the curb (clean up after yourself) or trespass to get to the "goodies". At one apartment complexe folks would leave out reusable items near the trash bins. I used to call it the casual recycling center.

My wife is the queen of dumpster divers.

I bring home all the washers and dryers that are set out, some of the men from the Chruch and I repair them and give them to folks who do not have any. A lot of fun, and does some good also.

Thanks
RC

I once got a dresser compliments of the neighbors leaving it out on the curb.

My parents live in a low-income area (but lots of land). Occasionally they'll have a garage sale, and whatever they don't sell they put by the street. My dad says that stuff is always gone within an hour or two.

rcjames - craigslist might also be a good site for you to check out in that regard...there's a section of "free stuff" and they might have things that can be fixed and reused. I've even seen non-working cars in there before.

However, digging through a trash bag could be dangerous.

Where do you think shows like CSI get their plots? (and their body parts)

If someone sets it out as garbage, they no longer want it. Why would it be wrong to re-use an item rather than let it go to waste?

Actually, when we moved I put out a lot of scrap metal stuff in easy to reach spots on our curb, knowing the guys in their pickups would be making the rounds before the garbage men arrived.

I think some people go a little overboard. If it involves breaking into anything or going over locked gates or prowling around someone's property close to their home, not good. But scouting curbs on trash day? Or checking out open apartment or business dumpsters? No problem.

Nothing wrong with it, although I had one friend several years ago who took things from dumpsters I thought was gross. Like a bag of apples. I just am not taking food from a dumpster, not unless I was in extreme poverty or something.

There is a family here in town who will go through the grocery store dumpsters, it's shameful what is thrown away.

Funny story:
My sister had a non working washer she put out at the curb for whoever wanted it and no one picked it up...till she put a FOR SALE sign on it..then it was stolen! I guess the sign made it valuable.

That happens a lot.

We used to have a joke that if we wanted something taken off our lawn we'd put a "FOR SALE" sign on it...

Since, usually, once in a dumpster/recycle/trash bin it's the property of the 'waste' company not the business or individual. Probably one should ask the 'waste' company permission and rarely they will.

Every Tuesday, a young man goes up and down our street, fishing cans and bottles out of the recycle trash cans so he can turn them into a recycling facility for money. We don't put our cans and bottles into the City recycle bins, we save them so that we (or someone) can collect the recycling money. DH went out a few weeks ago and talked to this young man ... he can't find a job and needs to pay for college. So now when we see him, we give him a bag full of our saved cans and bottles.

We don't throw away good, usable stuff ... we Freecycle. It's much more rewarding.

Our first couch came from a dumpster. . . as did our kitchen cupboard. Of course we were students living in university housing and this was the norm.

Now that I live in a small town, I have only once picked something up off the curb. It was a beautiful, old treadle sewing machine. I just wanted the cabinet to use for my machine. After driving by the machine, day after day, I decided to go to the door and ask the owner if it was indeed there to be taken. She said yes so I did. I'm still using it (fifteen or sixteen years later).

I later had another neighbor tell me she was being tempted to do the same (pick up the machine). I gave her nearly a week so I thought I'd been more than generous.

So long as you aren't trespassing, go for it.

i live in an apt complex... and occassionally you'll see TVs or computers or couches or beds or shelves at the dumpster. my wife and i have scored a book shelf =)

i've TRIED to score a tv... but it didnt work... so i set it back. and i tried to score a computer... but the same problem. whenever we have something big to get rid of (an old tv or such) i just set it on the picknic table in the courtyard. its usually gone within the hr. we got a new bed and set our old one out there... and it was gone within an hr or so as well. so we give and partake as we see fit no i wouldnt jump IN the dumpster... but if its on the curb, or teh parking lot next to the dumpster... its fair game in my book! =) i also found an old stereo system (8track/am fm / phonograph) that i took to a goodwill.
