Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things.

Ok...shall we share

  • Pure
  • Lovely
  • Admirable
  • Excellent
  • Praiseworthy

Whenever I've come across this verse I've wondered, "Now how do I do that, think about these things?" Just exactly what could I be thinking about.

Will you help? Share from your life or other people's lives anything that matches these things, news stories, relationships, daily happenings, bits of wisdom, anything that you think would match these words.

Please don't read and pass on by but do stop in and lift up our minds.

In Tennessee, a guy killed a deer with his truck. An avid hunter, he took the use-able meat, turned it into stew and donated it to a homeless shelter.

When the shelter found out the stew was made from roadkill, they called the police and the man was arrested.

This is why Tennessee passed a law permitting citizens to eat roadkill in 1999.

I use these verses to help me gain control over my thought-life. I struggle with a very active mind in the realm of fantasy and sometimes it can be overwhelming. I'm not talking about dragons and such but those thoughts that enter your mind about every day stuff.

My husband is 10 minutes late therefore he must be dead in a ditch and I can't get to him...he's bleeding and alone...the police will be knocking on my door.

And when he gets home, I'm a basket-case. See what I mean? It just escalates into craziness!

But if I become focused on God's word - I know I can trust Him. I will dwell on life-giving thoughts rather than anxiety -ridden scenarios.

I love the song by Casting Crowns, The Voice Of Truth - excellent lyrics that talk about setting our minds on things of God.

I suffer from pessimistic, negative thoughts and need to think on things better than what I do.

I'm trying to figure out how to use this verse in controlling my thought life.

Ginny, great thread!

Philippians 4:8 is one of my favorite verses and has significantly helped direct my life (when I have gotten out of the way and allowed such direction).

heehee . . . I'm just now listening to Voice of Truth (for the first time, at that); and it pretty much says what the above verse says.

Well, I do a lot of driving in rush hour traffic, and as a result am familiar with a lot of car bumpers. As I sit and contemplate yet another bumper I remind myself that car bumpers are probably not what He wants me to be focusing on ... so, I remind myself that He has provided us all with nature! I look for formations in the clouds, I appreciate the colors on the horizon as the sun is setting, I notice the flowers on the side of the road, I listen for sounds of birds if I'm near trees, I pay attention to the words in the worship songs on the radio, I flip open my Bible and read a verse when I'm at a red light ... it's a great reminder of Who is in charge ... even if there are people in stopped cars holding me up from arriving at my destination as quickly as I'd like to.

And I have this verse typed up and tucked into my dashboard so I don't forget!

Focusing, thanks for your input. Whatsoever is lovely which is how I see thinking on nature describes is as you said a good way to put into action this verse.

Does a thunderstorm count? And lightening? And thunder?

What a great idea, Ginny . I too suffer from pessimistic, negative thinking.

I have a whole bunch of 5" x 7" cards on which I have written favorite Scripture verses. If I sit down and read these out loud, it helps me to get my mind off whatever negatives are running through it.

Picturing running water, waterfalls reminds me of purity. Mountains are very noble.

Sometimes I picture myself sitting under a beautiful shade tree in a mountain meadow with a crystal clear stream running through it.

Sometimes I picture myself sitting quietly with Jesus, looking over his world. No words are spoken. We may share a smile now and then. Its just the most wonderful, peaceful, safe place to be. I'm not using the right words it describe how incredible it feels. But believe me, it's the best place to be . All those words describe Him, don't they?

Lovely

Yes they do Edith. Thank you for sharing.

A friend on facebook posted a video showing the story behind the song "It is Well With My Soul". I thought it admirable.

I've found that when I am upset with someone the way I've interpreted the verse is to think or try to think on something that is good about the person you are upset with. It does help me.

Such as hubby just said something demeaning to me but you know he says I love you each and every day.

One of the things I've thought of when I am afraid is Christ calming the seas and wind. He spoke and they listened.

My happiness does not depend on outer circumstances; I have deep-down joy from God himself that fills me every day.

Great thread, Ginny! Thanks for the link.

When life is hard, with trials, sorrows, etc., it's very difficult to think on good things. It helps me to start noticing, counting the little (or not so little) things in life that I have been allowed to enjoy. And tho my heart may be heavy and the tears may be many, I try to be aware of how good God really is to me, how many ways He really has blessed me . . . so many little things, so many not so little things . . .

First I have to thank him for HIM -- for his presence in my life, his grace, his love, for his Holy Spirit he has sent to help me and comfort me, and for his forgiveness that allows me to come boldly to the throne of grace and ask him for more! I thank him for my country and the freedoms I have enjoyed, for the fact that I don't wake in the mornings afraid for my very life or the life of my loved ones, for His protection over us in the many risky situations we get ourselves into; I thank Him that I don't need to hide my faith, I can openly share, openly read the Bible, openly pray, and that I found a beautiful church to worship and learn and grow in many years ago; I thank him for my family, for our home; and yes, for nature -- flowers, trees, birds, animals, even thunderstorms! Once I get started on this endeavor, there are just so many, many things to thank him for, and my sorrow or my worries have been lifted, and maybe even lightened a bit by this reminding of all the good and true and lovely things I have been given.

And I thank him for my friends . . . this includes you, Ginny . . . thank YOU for starting this thread!

My husband had on a movie I detested. Out of the actor's mouths were cuss words every time they opened their mouths. My husband I knew didn't mind but I did. I had a choice I could leave the room or I could say something. I choose to object to the movie. I said, "Isn't there anything else you could be watching. This movie is horrible." My husband made a choice, he listened to me, found another movie that was better and cleaner and which we could both watch. I sat in the room with him and we enjoyed time together watching this other movie. I was happy because my husband listened to my objections and took my feelings under consideration.
