Well, I can only think 0f 4 times: 01. Gen 17:15 And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. 02. Gen 17:5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. 03. Gen 32:28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. 04, Act 13:9 Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him... Now the last one does not actually say God told Saul to change his name; most people think Saul started doing this since he planned to going to mainly Gentile locations.

ORIGINAL: techne i'd like to generate a list of scriptures where God gives people or places a new name, or when names get changed because of an encounter with or revelation of God. i know there are many of you for whom it would be a piece of cake to generate such a list so i would appreciate the assistance (i'm preaching this sunday while the pastor is away at a conference in london). yikes! John 1 41The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ). 42And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter). Simon meant 'shifting sand' or something like that if I remember correctly, while Peter means 'rock'. The revelation of Christ ultimately changed Peter from shifting sand into a rock.

ORIGINAL: techne what about place names? Hmmm....not off the top of my head. That'll take some thumbing through my Bible. Oh, oh! What about Meribah and...and...and...argh! I Can't remember the other place where the Isrealites tested God and made Moses wonder why he ever went into the ministry. Massah, was it? Or something like that...
