..... yelling preachers totally turn me off.

Ours yells when he gets on a roll. I think he believes he is being dramatic... but it seems inappropriate when his outbursts are so loud that all the speakers distort.

.... my husband has had 3 brain surgeries - the shouting/yelling/outburst style of preaching really hurts his head.

We sit in the back. I'm not a 'back-row' type of person...

Hello Covaan_Meshuga

Some people believe that the anointing is on preachers that scream and holler. I'll not get into the why. But personally, I don't attend churches where the preachers do that. No problem.

Could it be that people head for the back pew because they want to be out of "slobber range?"

I always thought that the ones in back are the first ones out so they get the best parking spots at the restaurants.

In the age of the swine flu, that's probably the safest place to be.

Thanks to television we are able to see a wide range of preacher's speaking styles. And, it is clear that there are expected styles in various church traditions.

This was one of the themes of the movie "Marjoe" by Marjoe Gortner. Marjoe and a variety of pastors talk about the most effective styles.

While probably not intentional, some of these styles that have evolved and become common in certain groups, emulate Neural Linguistic Programming techniques.

A lot of preaching styles are culturally determined by type of church, socio economic status of church etc
