The other day at a home Bible Study, we were considering, 1Sa 3:1 Now the boy Samuel ministered to the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was rare in those days; there was no widespread revelation. 1Sa 3:2 And it came to pass at that time, while Eli was lying down in his place, and when his eyes had begun to grow so dim that he could not see, 1Sa 3:3 and before the lamp of God went out in the tabernacle [fn] of the LORD where the ark of God was, and while Samuel was lying down, 1Sa 3:4 that the LORD called Samuel. And he answered, "Here I am!" When someone asked how old Samuel was at that time, I said, "twelve", but could not remember how I knew that? Later at home I searched the Scriptures, but was unable to locate confirmation, it is possible I had in mind Jesus as described by Luke, but I am not sure? Luk 2:42 And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast. I would be most gratefully if someone could help me. Thank you. Every blessing. Edwin.

I don't think you are going to find an age of Samuel when that event happened to him. Chapter 3 calls him a boy (NKJV). While he was growing up at the tabernacle, his mother would bring him a robe "year by year." It would seem that several years had passed from the time his mother dedicated him until the time the Lord spoke to him. Twelve would not be an unreasonable number but I don't think you are going to find an exact age.

I think Larry is right. His being a "boy" would indicate 12 or younger.

He was probably 13 or older i.e. the Hebrew text uses the term Na'ar to refer to Samuel and younger children would be refered to as Yeled.
