Both my 4yr old and my 1 yr old have wellness visits at the dr tomorrow. The flu has just started to hit this area, not heavily, but there are reports of it here and there. Should I delay these visits? They are supposed to get shots. Our dr's office has a healthy waiting room and a sick waiting room. I don't let either kid play with toys in those rooms. What should I do?

I say go. If you don't feel comfortable waiting even in the well-waiting room, tell the staff you'll be waiting in your car and to please call your cell phone when your time to go into the actual office is imminent.

Make sure your kids keep their hands off their faces and have a little bottle of hand sanitizer ready to go on their hands the moment you leave.

I took my daughter to her annual check-up during peak flu season. It was fine.

Chances are your kids have already come in contact with the virus and may already be caring it around. I wouldn't worry about the Dr.s office.

I'd go. Unless you show up and there are a bunch of sick kids hacking everywhere...then not so much. But really...by virtue of the fact that you leave your house occasionally, they've likely already been exposed at some point

go - Most dr's offices being it's the height of this flu season stuff have already removed all magazines and toys anyway and are usually pretty quick about getting the sickies in to rooms rather quickly. If you are still concerned tho call and ask what precautions they are taking and if there is an exam room that has been set aside for healthy folk. I know our dr's office has 2 such exam rooms.

Blessings,

Garsy

Try to schedule your appt first thing in the morning, the office will be cleaner and not as many sick people will have been through. Also, take some sanitizing wipes and dont feel bad about wiping stuff down. I wiped down all our hands, the exam table, etc. Crazy, maybe. but hey, we didnt come out of there sick either! We also didnt let Isaac touch anything, not even the chair arms.

We went today for 2 year and 6 month well visit. They have a healthy and sick waiting room. They way I look at it, if I am going to take them to Walmart or the church nursery then the healthy room at the doctor's office won't be any worse. Avoiding getting sick is important but at this point I am not willing to go into isolation.

Surpassing,
That is true. We do take them to walmart, the grocery store and church, so I guess it's much in the same. I am going to take Erin's suggestion, however, and wipe down stuff. It eases my mind.

Is it getting cold where you live? You could have them wear their little winter gloves while in the waiting room, just for a little protection for their hands from germs.

Hmmmm, no not really. I mean I could, but I wouldn't to any other place. Don't know if Rhys (the baby) would keep them on. He'd probably take them off and chew on them.

Well, then you would know whatever he was chewing on was clean.

FWIW, I always wipe down carts at Walmart and stuff too. I'm not TOO paranoid but its a simple precaution to take. I bought Germ X wipes in individual packs and carry them in the diaper bag. Having a preemie makes you think about that kind of stuff a little more. I've also been know to tell off people for touching my child and refuse to let people hold him.

Wow, Erin, I wish I had your guts.

Visit went well, we were the first people in the exam room, so that's nice. They have a cleaning service and the waiting room has no chair arms, which I found nice.

Here's the sticker. Our dr's family all has the swine flu. Great. She hasn't gotten it yet. Oh well. I suppose it's bound to happen sooner or later.

Glad it went good. Too bad about the docs family. Last time we were in the doc was off the day before sick, not sure what from though. At least docs are, hopefully, a little more cautious about spreading everything.

Aw..I'm not too gutsy, people did laugh at my "dont touch the baby" hang tag on his carseat.
We were in the Drs office one day and some weird lady said "aww..can I hold him" I told her, 'umm..no."
