Do you think that the Charlie Brown program, "The Great Pumpkin" teaches kids to worship idols? It seems to focus a lot on Linus's obsession with waiting for "The Great Pumpkin", hoping that good things will happen.

To me, while it may seem to be an innocent kid's cartoon, I think that it promotes a form of idol worship by teaching kids to depend on inanimate objects for happiness. What do you think about this?

I put the so-called "Great Pumpkin" in the same category as Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.

Laugh. Enjoy the music. Enjoy the characters. And laugh somemore.

Or don't watch it.

I haven't watched television in ten years. It's very easy to not watch television.

Some adults 'over think' a child's imagination. Have some faith in a child's imagination; enjoy and appreciated the wonder.

I love Linus, He is my favorite character. He has been given the charm of being a geek, if you will. Have you been reading the comic strip? He doesn't really idolize the Great Pumpkin. The whole thing is a spoof of Santa Claus and Easter Bunny, etc. In fact, he sends out a form letter to all three figuring that they get so much mail that they would never notice the difference.

I have watched this special as a child, many times... and never have I grown an unhealthy attatchment to a jack 0'lantern. I have let them sit outside well into November to see how the face squishes up while it rots.

Seriously?

I think I'm insulted on behalf of children everywhere that anyone thinks they're that dumb.

The only inanimate object I've ever seen kids taught to depend on for happiness, and by their own parents among others, is green and made of paper.

This is my line of thinking as well. I do believe MOST children are much more intelligent than that.

I think we're reading too much into things.

No. I always thought it was making fun of santa claus and the easter bunny.

Assuming the OP was serious...

I think it actually teaches against Idol Worship. Linus puts all his faith in something, and it doesn't come through. I'm reminded of the prophets of Ba'al up on Mt. Carmel, trying to wake up their god to get him to burn up their sacrifice.
But also - it's a kid's production. Kids believe silly things sometimes. And it's not like he was worshiping the Great Pumpkin - he just wanted some candy. If you want to know what - or more accurately, whom - Linus worships, watch the Charlie Brown Christmas Special.

Yes, that is the joke. We can't just get together and enjoy one anothers company, we have to create iconic figures that hand out goodies.

I've never personally taken part in a family+friends gathering where Santa or the Bunny take precedence over the people there. Have you?

Only if we are really really sincere.

I don't think it encourages idol worship.
