Ok......I have three questions......
What Bible do you use?
And......for a struggling read, what Bible would you recommend......(an adult who reads at the middle school level).
And, for your children........what Bible do they read?

This has been a really hard question for me.
I use mostly KJV. I got my first Bible when I was 7 and never had any real difficulty with it. My four oldest kids each have a KJV and NKJV. It is hard to find children's Bibles in the KJV anymore. I am comfortable with NKJV partly because I knew one of the people who oversaw the translating and know how serious he was about the integrity of the Scriptures. My 6 year old is about to get her first Bibles and she will get one of each as well.
In light of that, I really can't put myself in the shoes of someone who has a lot of difficulty with the KJV, especially the NKJV. I know that there must be a real problem, but I have a hard time relating.

(1) I use a number of bibles. My church bible is an NASB reference bible. At one job I use an NASB study bible. At the second I have my choice of dozens (it's a Christian book store), but I tend to grab the Nelson NJKV Study Bible. At Home I'll use one or more of 13 different versions depending on what I'm looking for.
(2) Definitely recommend the New Living Translation. It was translated using a limited vocabulary (800 or so words, I think) and simplified sentence structure specifically to make it easier to read. It uses modern English, so no "thee's and thou's". You can get anything from a simple text bible to a complex study bible, depending on your needs.
(3) When selling to a parent or child, I start with Zondervan's Adventure Bible. My experience as a Sunday school teacher for first an second grade kids was that they love this bible. It has the full NIV (or NIrV) text, plus lots of extra features that keep kids interested.

Revised Standard or the NIV. But I look in other translations if I want to get the meaning of something.

My wife and I split it pretty evenly among The Amplified Bible, NIV, KJV, and The Message. We also have a ton of others around the house (Arthur S. Way, Phillips, Jerusalem, RSV, Cottonpatch, an old Living Bible, a Dakes KJV, and many others) if we particularly are looking at several different takes on the same scripture.

I have a NIV, NLT, and NKJV. I read them all about equal. I like the NIV or the NLT the best.

King James Version only. I have been reading and studying this version since I was 11 years old - 50 years - and have never had a hard time understanding it. Don't sell yourself short. You can understand the KJV, and nothing is left out of it or changed like the other versions. Pray for understanding and guidance. God wants you to understand His Word.
Please read Revelations 22:19 and take it seriously. That's enough to keep me with the King James Version and not mess with the newer ones that change, delete, and add words.

I was reared with KJV and taught to use it exclusively during my first over 50 years, but when I was around 46, I bought NIVs for my Sunday school class and caused a minor riot in that church. It was interesting, but i was trying to get 4th grade inner-city children to read Bibles. They were really struggling with KJV. I wanted them to read it with understanding, to read it because it was at a level they could understand, and yes, to read it because they enjoyed it. NIV was my choice for them, right or wrong.
Before I left that church, in order to be compliant with them but try another Bible, I bought a NKJV. Personally -- just my opinion, now! -- I found it severely inferior.
When I left that church, the first Bible I bought for myself was an NIV. That lasted about 4 months.
I then bought an NASB. I have basically stuck with that one since, although I have amassed many versions to read on the side. Along with the NASB, I read the Stones, which I particularly like, but it does not include the writings of the apostles, so i carry the NASB.
Whenever I run into people who are preteen through all adults who struggle with reading because of low reading skills, I suggest The Picture Bible, and so far, it has been a major success for such. I have given these to people who simply cannot read above a third-grade level, those with Downs Syndrome, and those with any limited IQ, whether born with it or whether that has developed because of drug use.

I use an NIV/MSG and my kids (13 and 9) use NIV and NLT. We all have KJV that we refer back to for reference though.

I have a variety of Bibles. I started with the NIV, then bought a KJV, then the NASB, I have the NKJV audio in my car, and my most recent purchase is the apologetics Bible. I also have an NIV/KJV parallel Bible. Online I can reference several other translations. Why? Because when I'm studying a subject I like to have as many translations at my fingertips as possible. Since I can't read the original texts, reading various translations helps me to have a better understanding.
What would I recommend? A study Bible.
My son, who is 13, reads mainly the KJV, but also reads from the NASB and NIV.

Right now I am using the English Standard Version. Most of my believing life I have used NIV and it is still my favorite. I changed to ESV cause it seemed I was just skimming the NIV after using it for so long.
I also use King James, NAS, Amplified, Message and the Living Bible. I like to read several translation-- when I am studying. And I just like to read different versions for pleasure.
I don't have a NLT but have read some online. It seems to be the simplest in text so I would suggest that for young readers or those with limited reading skills.

I have NASB; KJV and a couple other versions. Mainly the NASB and for right now that has to be it because the others are still packed; once everything's out I'll read in the NASB and then compare to the others. Grew up with RSV and a bit of NIV.
Not sure what 'middle school level' reading is but NIV or NASB or ESV might work.
My sons (7 & 6) have ESVs.

The ESV (English Standard Version) is my new favorite. It's a word-for-word translation and very similar to the NASB. However, the ESV does a little bit better with a couple passages that I don't think the NASB handled particular well.
If you want a dynamic equivalency Bible (more thought-for-thought, I don't recommend them for study) the NIV is probably the best. In my opinion the TNIV may be the most beautifully worded modern translation, although a lot of people are put off by the controversy surrounding it (totally unfounded IMO, having read through it). The NLT has too many squishy translation problems for me to be able to recommend it, it's a significantly poorer translation than the NIV.
While I love the flow and wording of the KJV, I just can't recommend it as it has far too many translation problems. It's not the translators fault, but there have been significant improvements our knowledge of ancient Hebrew and Greek. While it was a great translation 400 years ago, it simply doesn't meet the current standard of scholarship in those languages.

As far as Bible translations for your kids? I have six boys 7-years-old and under, and we read to them from the ESV. My oldest son has an NIV. I wouldn't recommend getting kids something tailored for children, those usually have little application boxes all over the place that are of questionable value. Most children can read and understand just about any translation you give them.

1) Right now I'm reading from the NKJV but I want to buy an ESV.
2) When I was saved as a teen, my aunt gave me a teen Bible. It was a life application one, and an easy read. They're selling different teen Bibles at the Christian bookstore; there's even an ESV one.
3) We don't have children, but I've seen Bibles for kids out there (Christian bookstore).

I personally stay away from the (N)KJV. It's highly inaccurate compared to more modern translations, and, in many cases, uses words in ways that we no longer use them today. There is much danger of misunderstanding while using that particular translation.
I use an NASB translation for study. I have a copy of the Message that I read from time to time; I'm a little wary of the looseness of its translation, but it is rather poetic and enjoyable.

I've used a variety of versions over the years. I started with the KJV. I did all my memory work when I was using the RSV. Then I used the NIV exclusively for about 10 years. Now I use the ESV, My wife currently uses the HCSB mainly because all of our Sunday School material uses that version. I have a number of other versions in my library but use them mainly for reference.
