As opposed to an inaudible voice? Yes in my imagination. 'I will care for you.' 'Just love her maybe from afar; I'll take care of her heart.' 'Are you still trusting?'(in My blood and obedience)then follow my lead.'

Not audible, but there was a time I knew He was speaking to me. I was a new Christian, dating this guy from church and jerking him around. God spoke very clearly to me: I don't treat you like that. It terrified me. I immediately confessed my sin, and treated guys well ever since.

no. and until now, I'd never met anyone who said they had either. Interesting for those here who replied "yes"... were you alone when you heard this, a literal and audible voice? If someone was with you did they hear it too? Or, if someone had been with you, do you expect they would have heard it?

I don't need an audible voice. If God spoke to me audibly, it would change everything. It would affect my faith. I would expect it all the time. I would demand it. And if He continued to speak to me, I would eventually take it for granted. Look at how the children of Israel acted after witnessing all that God did.

If You heard Him it would profoundly change your faith, but did Job expect it after his converation with God? And why would you demand anything from God when He owes you nothing?! DaveLinde~ I heard Him audibly once in the presence of another and they did not hear and the 2nd time I was alone, but what He spoke was very prevelant and actually quite eery if you wish. I did not expect either moments, but to Him were necessary. CMT

Hello vmginny No but I do know that He has spoken to me several times throughout my life. It was more of a realization or a thought. I have verefied several of them. The most outstanding one was when He told me that I was saved by grace through faith. That is the exact wording of the first part of Ephesians 2:8.

ORIGINAL: vmginny Have you ever heard God speak in an audible voice? Yes. Once. I was a college student and I was praying about something and I heard HIM ask me a question, which He asked 3 times: "Why are you here?" The third time (after my first 2 lame answers) I asked Him why. Apparently he had my attention enough I did not need the audible voice for the answer.

I haven't heard him speak audibly but like some others have mentioned here I know when he's speaking to me. Sometimes it through another christian or his word and he'll bring all these things together to apply to something that is going on in my life, sometimes it's just in my heart but I know what is being said is from him. I remember once I was walking home and I passed a house that I knew an older lady lived in and there was an ambulance outside and people rushing here and there. I crossed the street because I didn't want to get in the way of what they were doing but at the same time something inside of me was urging me to stop and offer assistance, but sadly I did not listen and reasoned that I would be in the way. The next day when I went to drive to work, it came to me very clearly that what I had done the day before was no different than those who left the man by the side of the road injured and only the good samaritan helped him. It was a gentle correction and I knew it was from God. This thread reminds me of something I have been told recently in that God cannot speak to your heart when you want something different than he does as your heart speaks louder, but I disagree. I believe he still speaks to his children and they know his voice.

I believe he still speaks to his children and they know his voice. A former pastor once said "God's ability to make Himself heard is greater than our inability to hear." IOW, He knows what it will take to get us to listen. From what I have experienced (and heard from others) is that the "audible voice" is reserved for times when we will not hear any other way.

Yes. It was during a time when I was going through a very difficult trial. His voice was resounding yet gentle. The words He spoke gave me confidence and reassurance.

It is interesting to me that this topic appears now. For twenty-five years I have kept quiet about "the voice" and only recently was asked directly by a person of faith and hedged, averted a direct answer that I had, indeed, heard what I took as the voice of God (in a messenger) audibly speak to me. It has seemed wrong to admit for all this time. I kept thinking it was or would lead to spiritual pride. But it could also be a denial of his power and grace. I had to finally consider I was wrong to keep it secret...and then this thread. The first time was in '84. I was nine months sober after a very serious and long sabbatical from God's will. I never stopped talking to Him, did so at some length everyday, but I had become far more interested in carnal desires. I was walking to the couch to do the crossword puzzle, a practice I had to bring my mind back, when I suddenly stopped, looked up at the ceiling, and asked from the deepest part of my being, "What do you want me to do? Where do you want me to go?" And waited. And waited. And waited. After maybe ten or fifteen minutes, actually expecting the ceiling to part, I took a step towards the couch. "59 down." I turned to see if someone had walked up the stairs to my apartment; there was no mistaking it was audible. No one. "What was that all about," I thought as I sat down. But as I opened the paper, it occurred to me (duh) that was a crossword answer; I quickly looked up the reference: "NM art community (four letters). The answer was Taos, and to make a long story short ( and cut through all the other "coincidences") it was there I returned firmly into faith. But that was not the end. Over the course of the next five years, perhaps twelve times altogether, an audible voice spoke to me; twice it kept me from serious injury or possibly death.

I am well aware of the fact that those who do not have such experiences are not quick to say, "How nice." It is the same about prescience, wine-tasting, or anything some one has had no personal experience of: hard to accept. If it did actually exist, it begs the question: "Why haven't I experienced it?" The answer to that question is averted by disdain, contempt prior to investigation. To admit to the possibility appears to equate to admitting a deficiency. Cartloads of questions about worthiness and so forth are avoided with a simple, "Preposterous!" Of course this appears as if I am arguing for you to accept my "preposterous" experience. Yet I am only describing my fears and why I did not speak up. Under the guise of humility, I was a coward not to say something sooner. I did not want to stand out as strange. I was deeply affected by an article that appeared in the "Philadelphia Inquirier" when I was thirteen. A woman claimed that God had told her to eat her baby, and she obeyed. It occurred to me at the time how it might look if Abrah, my neighbor, had taken his son out to the barbeque pit close to our fence and put his son on it, all set to light the match. How are we to know what is inspired or not? Our standards today would have Abrah locked up. A few members on this forum would be screaming for his head. Why didn't he at least question such a bizarre request? "The voice of God...what are you, some kind of nut?" Such faith as Abrah had is almost impossible to accept, and if it were not in the Bible, it would be called the worst form of faith by most Christians. It ignored everything about the standard of God that was known: murder of innocence, the Noahic covenant. So, if we do have a "voice," how are we to determine it is a righteous voice? We need to go back to Abrah to answer that question. Love God as Abrah did, have total trust in God as Abrah did. Is this enough? Many Christians feel it is not. But Abrah was the preview of the New Covenant. Faith in God alone is far, far more than enough. Can we err in this? No, not if our heart is true. Are there dangers in this approach? Of course, but the greater danger for Christians is to look for any other support than complete faith in Christ.
