I think the packaging states, "undergarment." So...wear them under a garment.

That's an interesting explanation, but since it's only linked to a blog and not a dictionary, I'd hazard a guess that it was made up out of whole cloth. It just sounds way too coincidental to me. I don't know about Old French (where the word waif comes from), but I'm pretty sure it wasn't used in Old English; I'd have to look it up in the multi-volume Oxford dictionary to be sure.
But to stay on topic, I don't think they work as outerwear any more than corsets do for women. And I hate the nickname too.

They are not appropriate for wearing in public, and IMO, they are only appropriate under casual shirts. If your wearing a dress shirt, especially a white one, PLEASE wear a proper undershirt.
Manda, the fabric that your "white vests" are made from is different. It's more of a real cotton knit. "Wife Beaters" are made from a cotton knit as well, but it's ribbed which makes it stretch out, lose it's shape, and get nasty looking. My dad travels to London for business and always brings back a plethora of white vests for the guys in the family because the fabric is much nicer.

I guess I understand what everyone is mostly saying here and I personally don't wear wife-beaters (at all). But I also feel maybe some have forgotten/missed the fact that they are a type of fashion style for some people these days. Looking through magazines or watching MTV, etc. you'll see young men wearing them with jeans. They are sometimes worn to show off a tight body and/or give off an urban/thug/gangster-ish type of "cool" look.
I know they still genearlly get a bad rap and are often associated with unkempt, violent, and otherwise unsavory characters, but I do think there is a small portion of people (usually younger in age) for whom the wife-beater is a fashion item. That's where it can be tricky. For some segments of the population, I'm guessing these are very cool looking.
And for women, there seems to be less fuss about them wearing one versus a male. Not disagreeing with anyone's posts here. Just wanted to point out that the wife-beater does seem to have an appeal for some people.
I've seen guys where them out to the local corner market and also in the mall and at theh movie theatre.

I don't like anything about "wife-beater" shirts. Not the way they look, and certainly not what they are called.

So? 
Lots of things are "fashionable" and yet still tacky or inappropriate.
