DES MOINES, Iowa — A 13-year-old Iowa cat has been infected with swine flu, veterinary and federal officials said Wednesday in what is believed to be the first case of the H1N1 virus in a feline in the United States.

The domestic shorthaired cat was treated last week at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in Ames and has recovered, officials said. The virus also has been confirmed in two ferrets — one in Oregon and the other in Nebraska — but they died.

"We've known certainly it's possible this could happen," said Centers for Disease Control spokesman Tom Skinner. "This may be the first instance where we have documentation that transmission occurred involving cats or dogs."

Story

As a cat owner, this is scary, since no one in my family qualifies for the swine flu shot. I'm praying that none of us gets sick. Smokey has enough medical problems as it is.

I was concerned about my birds. Has anyone heard of it being transmitted from humans to pet birds?

YES.... if you get sick, stay away from your birdies until you're better (just in case!) (see link below)

Ferrets can get the flu, too.

I'm afraid to ask how someone would know that.

I know it because I'm fairly active on a Pet Forum.

FERRETS CAN GET H1N!

Testing was done by the University of Nebraska Veterinary Diagnostic Lab where the ferret tested positive for H1N1. The state public health veterinarian said it is not unexpected, but it is rare. Only 2 ferrets in the nation have died from H1N1.

H1N1 flu has jumped to turkeys, too ... so bird owners should be careful.

Thanks Harvie.

A few cases have begun to pop up in one of the town schools-not one my kids go to-but their friends probably have siblings in that school. I suspect it is only a matter of time before someone in my family gets it. If anyone gets it I will keep them away from my birds. Thanks so much for the info-saved me a call to my Avian Vet.

At the beginning of this pandemic, I first thought it is just another flu, but now it is starting to worry me a little. We are just on the cusp of flu season which usually begins here in LA just after Halloween.

At the HS where my wife teaches there have been at least three confirmed cases of H1N1. She gets exposed to 170 possible carriers a day!
