My dad was in an accident where his life was saved because he was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle. Yet, he still insists that everyone in his car wear a seatbelt at all times.

While there are some accidents that are survivable without seatbelts...they are actually few and far between...even in rollovers. The leading cause of death in rollover accidents is being ejected from the vehicle..and either having your own vehicle roll over the top of you, or being hit by another vehicle either involved in the accident or coming along shortly after.
The odds of surviving an accident because you aren't wearing a seatbelt is like 1 in 100. The odds of dying in an accident because you are wearing one....1 in 100

I have a serious question about the statistics that underlie this statement.
Do seat belts save lives? Absolutely. So everyone wears one in my car. (with an occasional special circumstance exception)
But in my accident, after getting out of surgery (still rather groggy) a police officer asked me what I remembered of the accident (absolutely nothing to this day) for his report. He then asked if I was wearing a seat belt. This was before it was required by law. I replied I did not remember, so he said "You lived. I will put down that you were wearing it." A few hours later I remembered that I was NOT wearing it, and have wondered ever since how accurate those stats really are.

To be honest...most cops don't make that assumption...and the stats are old ones...so he made an assumption based on stats...not the other way around.
I have been in a couple serious accidents...and both times the cops wrote down the truth as to whether a seatbelt was worn or not.

Let me tell you a story about seatbelts.
I was driving a small compact in the 80's.
I got caught in a snow storm.
I stopped.
The semi behind me did not.
Pushed me under the semi front of me.
Station wagon to my right and railing.
Then, salt truck slammed into my left side.
Now, the hood is collapsing, and as more vehicles slam into the back of the salt truck and semi, I am further inched under the semi front of me.
The left front support bar of the hood (the one between the driver side door and the front window) is sheered off, and is pointing at my belly, pinching my left hand and the seat belt.
I cannot unbuckle because the metal stabbed through the belt. I am also bleeding like a stuck pig. I am just not squealing.
As vehicles pile at the end, the hood is folding in, and I know that support bar will go through me, very, very slowly.
If that doesn't kill me, the hood rolled inward as a sardine can will conveniently slice me in half.
The next semi made it past the dozen or so cars, but slammed into the salt truck.
It did not fold the hood further in, but made it buckle lengthwise like a paper plane.
I leaned back, with all my might and broke the seat, so I was laying flat.
I wiggled out backwards into the back seat.
The back window was already out, so I just crawled out onto the grill of the semi behind me.
To the horror of the trucker when my bloody head popped up on his windshield. :D (It was one of those flat face trucks) .
This probably took less than 10 minutes. We waited in the snow storm for an other half hour I think, until emergency vehicles were able to get there.
So. Seatbelts. It almost killed me.
My kids wear them, front and back seat. It is not ever discussed. It is just natural reaction to sitting into my vehicles.
Plus my kids never know when I decide it is time to take the rough road.

Not in the case of my rear collision. It was not a huge slam where I would had a bounce. It was more of a push, after contact.
I am not saying seatbelts are not a safety feature. But let us not presume that they are always beneficial.

The driver's side door was smashed it to about the centerline of the steering column. The driver's seat was crumpled and shoved over as well. The frame under the door was intact and in its proper place. The seat belts were bolted to the floor, into the underlying frame members. And as I always wear my belts quite tight (esp those old lap belts) there would have been no option for that belt to allow for the seat moving. I would have been cut in half by the belt, or pulled thru the gap between the seat and back.

I'm very happy that sister, niece, and baby are OK. What a scary thing.
In my family we wear seatbelts all the time. My son is still in a booster seat even though the law in our state does not require it (based on his age--over 4 years, and weight--over 40 lbs) because it better places the seatbelt on his body. I have explained to him my reasons for wanting him in the booster seat and made it his choice as to whether or not he uses it (because his father--non-custodial--threw a fit about me still "making" my son use the booster).
Yes, I know of people who were killed because of seatbelts and/or the accident was bad enough that seatbelt use/non-use really did not matter.
However, back in the 1970's (long before seat belt laws) my dad was trained to be the driver's ed teacher. He came home from a week long seminar...and from then on we never got in the car but what we were buckled in.
