I usually get the "You've got your hands full!" I smile and wave 5 fingers and say, "Nope, just one!"

LOL, Sarah! What can I say...it works for me. Maybe people don't get it when I say it either, and they just smile and pretend they do?

I'm telling you Maggie, you gotta move farther south. Your good man would love the weather down here, and 3 kids wouldn't raise an eyebrow. One lady at my church has 5 sons, and we all think they're great! Seriously, there's 2 churches within spittin' distance no matter where you are. They don't call us the Bible Belt for nothing.

What I get annoyed at isn't if they ask you if you are done yet, but rather when they get a little upset once they find out that permanent measures haven't been done. Why would they care? I just don't understand that one. Especially if it is a family raising their children in the Lord and they are a happily married couple.

ORIGINAL: Sideways What does everyone here think of those who would deliberately choose a 1 child family, and not those who struggle with infertility? Is that off topic? Disclaimer: I'm a non-parent lurker. I'm the (now-grown) child in a one child family. I guess whether that was chosen or not depends on your perspective. There were some pretty serious complications when I was born, and doctors were of the opinion that further biological children were possible, but risky. Since they had always wanted a large family, they waited and thought and prayed about it, and if they should try for biological children or adopt. I remember at one point they asked me if I wanted a sibling. I told them yes, sure, as long as it was a big brother in college. They explained that this was not possible biologically, and that they probably would not be able to adopt a college age kid, because he would only be about 10 years younger than them. So, I told them not to bother. Eventually, they decided that their family was complete as it was, and I'm an only. I really like being an only. There are blessings to having sibs, but there are also great things about being an only. I wouldn't have changed it for the world. Still wouldn't. And if I'd wanted kids, I probably would have wanted just one. But, more generally to the topic. I might ask a parent in a large family what they felt the unique challenges and blessings were, but I'd never ask someone if they were done, or if they didn't have kids when they were. And, although I don't mind people asking if I have kids, I don't like being asked if I plan to (none of your beeswax) and I simply do not discuss why, except with a select few people I know well, and I never justify my decision. But, if people ask specifically "do you have/are you planning on having a family" I say yes I do have a family. My family is me, my DH, Katie the Wonder Puppy, my mom, her guy friend, her Ecuadoran gardener, my SIL, her husband, their daughter, my bagpipe instructor, my hairdresser and his partner, and various other beloved hangers-on. My family is anyone God gives me to love!
