I stay out of the John and Kate thread and the Duggers( well sometimes I peek in) and found that when I would watch these shows and read some of the posts it just encourages certain sins. Am I wrong or just seeing it for what it is?

I think your right. We basically came to the same conclusion at Bible study..that we shouldn't really watch those shows..however I keep having an addictive draw to the Duggar thread.

Are you asking if Reality Shows cause the participants to sin ... or if WATCHING Reality Shows causes viewers to sin?

Cause. I'm thinking of things like gossip manily, but I suppose anger, jealousy and envy could be included. I just know that when I was watching J & K +8 I was not thinking kind things about them.

Ahh, gotcha.

I guess I was thinking of reality shows like Top Chef and Project Runway... and I do confess that I covet some of the wonderful things that are created on those shows! I wasn't thinking about letting-a-camera-follow-you-around sort of reality shows.

I think that competition shows based on skill are different from popularity contest shows where people are voted out of the house, off the island, etc. by viewers or other contestants and from shows where people are photographed/recorded living their regular lives.

I don't think it's possible for any show to force people to gossip, but I think that's a major motive for watching the latter two types of show for at least some people. I don't have access to TV in my daily life (by choice), but on the occasions when I have watched these programs, I'd say, with a few exceptions, such as a couple of early episodes of "John and Kate" that focused on the logistics of dealing with 6 babies/toddlers, my motives, sadly, wouldn't pass inspection. Now, I feel convicted even when I pop into the threads about those shows.

A contest of skill is a completely different matter. I don't think anyone would argue that the World Series or the Superbowl promotes gossip.

I guess I was thinking more of the family ones liek J & K, Wife Swap, The Duggars, etc. . Because we don't see the whole picture we can get caught up in the emotion of what's going on and I think that's why I stopped watching them.

Harvie, I watched Parking Wars and I laughed and laughed.

My husband and I were having a discussion regarding television recently. I haven't watched TV for ten years. But when we work out, the television is on at the gym.

My husband had seen a show called Family Guy (?). The content was sexual and immoral and was being shown during the 6-7pm hour.

Anyway, we were pondering:

Is televion encouraging sinful behavior? Or is television reflecting the sinful behavior our culture is involved in?

Probably both.

That's why I gave up television. If we take Paul's admonition to 'think on these things' (whatever is true/honorable/right/pure/lovely/of good repute), there doesn't seem to leave much room for the average television viewing. Does there? It's like soaking your mind in pollution.

My thoughts.

I sometimes think I should too. There are alot of good things on, but you do have to be on guard all the time.

I must live a sheltered life ... I've never seen Family Guy, Jon & Kate, or the Duggars. I've never seen The Simpsons, I've never seen SouthPark. I never watched Earl. I never watched Will & Grace. I've never seen Lost. I've never watched NCIS. And I've never seen Desperate Housewives.

I do think that, for those of us who watch television, we should choose wisely and avoid those shows that we find offensive, immoral, or which might cause us to sin. Fortunately, my television came with a channel changing button as well as an OFF button.

I have enjoyed NCIS but we watch the History Channel alot. I do like to watch Bait Car on TRU t.v.

btw, some of you know that my daughter had a great one week vacation to buy a new summer wardrobe on What Not To Wear. Their staff was wonderful to work with. Bear in mind that shopping alone took about 24 hours and to break down a couple week's taping to only about 45 minutes (15 mins for commercials) you have to pick and chose and leave alot out.

I'm going to repeat what Harvie said. And I would add the Lord gave us a mind and He wants us to use it. Obviously Harvie does.
