Hello! I'm an addict called Lisa.

I wanted to start this thread for all of us here in the CW community who are in Recovery, as a place where we can share our experience, strength, and hope with each other, and also just to hang out with like-minded people.

Members of all 12 step-type groups are welcome here, along with those who love them.

CAUTION: this is NOT a substitute for meetings, and this thread is not intended to diagnose or treat any physical or mental health issue.

I'll start:

I'm an addict called Lisa. I have been in recovery since June of 06, and I just yesterday quit smoking as well.

I'm currently between my 4th and 5th step, just waiting for a good time to get together with my sponsor and get the 5th step done.

I have a wonderful home group, and plenty other awesome groups around here to visit.

My favorite Recovery slogan is, "I can't. God can. I think I'll let him."(synopsis of steps 1, 2, and 3)

What about you? Tell us your favorite step, slogan, reminder, etc.

Keep coming back!

I'm in a Christian support group called Overcomers in Christ, which uses a 12 goal approach, which is similar to the 12 step one. My main issue is compulsive overeating, but I'm working on other issues as well. I'm learning that I can overcome my addiction to sugar, because in Jesus, I'm not a victim of my addiction, but a victor.

Right on, Melissa! I have overeating issues too, but I have a strict, "one goal at a time" policy. I quit drugs and alcohol over 3 yrs ago, and now it is time to deal with the nicotine dependency. Next after this will be the overeating. I am told we have a good OA group here locally.

Now that I've hit the 24 hour mark, I'm going to tell my sponsor that I've quit.

Hope everyone has a lovely Sunday!~

Hi! Just wanted to say hello and bump this thread up. It's day 5 and I'm still not smoking!

I have a question and would like your input.

Now that I've quit smoking, I personally feel like I should change my clean date to reflect my freedom from nicotine. But I don't want to seem like I'm condemning other addicts or coming off like I'm somehow "better" because I don't smoke any more.

What are your thoughts?

Hmmmmm, so are you going to revise it again if ever you decide to come off caffeine?

My personal feeling is that nicotine is different, as like caffeine, it's more more mood altering than mind altering, if that makes any sense at all.

Would I be right in assuming that you're already off alcohol as well?

Yes, already off alcohol, same time as I came off drugs. I see your point with caffeine, however, I don't have the "bondage" to caffeine as I did/do to nicotine. That's what I really want to say by changing my clean date, that I'm breaking another addiction.

I know this seems silly, but I knew an alcoholic that changed his sober date when he stopped eating Snickers bars. He explained that they were as important to him as booze, and that for him (being a diabetic), they were just as dangerous. I laughed at first but understood his point.

OK, I'll come to the point.

What I was saying wasn't really about caffeine.

I'm not saying you will necessarily slip and have a cigarette, but it might happen, and I'm concerned that if you change your clean date now, and then slip, you may feel you're right back to square one, when you're actually not.

How about perhaps changing your clean date when you're a bit (a lot?) further down the line with the quitting?

OK, Manda, I see your point now, and you make a lot of sense. Yeah, it would really stink to "slip" and have to start over again. That maybe heaping more condemnation on myself than I can bear. I have another friend in the program that celebrates 2 clean dates, one for her drug addiction and the other for smoking. Perhaps that's what I will do. I also wouldn't want to give the impression to newcomers that I had relapsed, which is something else I had not thought of.

Truth is, I don't have to decide anything right away. I think I will give myself a little time to decide.

NA belief is that if you slip up and use drugs or drink alcohol, your clean time starts all over again.

Hello!

Sorry I've been out a couple days. Well, I made a decision to add another date but not give up my original clean time. I think this is the best idea for me, considering all factors. Thank you all for your input.

My home group is NOT having a meeting on Thanksgiving. I have mixed feelings about that. Holidays can be lonely for many, and chances of relapse increase through the holidays. I would have chaired it if they had asked me to.

Our area is having a gratitude feast the Saturday after Thanksgiving. I've never been to one but I'm sure it will be an awesome thing.
